I was recommended this by the owner of Pet Valu today (he is a retired vet) for my 5 month old kitten who has a fractured bone in her leg. He said it will help her now and also later. Just wondering if anyone else uses this? Or if there's any thing I should know about it.

I take brewers yeast myself. It is a yeast that is grown on sugar beets. It is naturally full of vitmains and minerals. A lot of different higher quality pet foods have brewwers yeast in the ingrediants so you migght want to check the labels to see if your cat is already getting it in the food. if not there is no harm in supplimenting a little. You can get powder from the health food store and sprinkle a little on the food or buy the tablets sold for pets.

Hissy, I hope you can find it, I didn't find anything on a quick google, and except for not wanting to give brewers yeast with garlic, as many of them have, I wasn't aware it could be harmful to cats

It's not so much that it's harmful, but rather that a cats digestive system cannot really extract much from the product. It has very little benefit to the cat, essentially it's just a filler. Dogs see a much higher benefit from a brewers yeast supplement.

Pat, I didn't mean anything by my comment. I was just letting people know I would look for it tomorrow after I get back from the vet. I almost made it to bed-

I am curious to bump this up in the forum. My vet recommended Brewer's Yeast tonight for my guy's coat. Max & Abbey tend to have fairly bad dandruff. The vet said it can help with the dandruff, shedding, and makes their coats soft. She gives it to her own pets. Had anyone found anything specifically contradictory?

Luv4Muzik,

Brewers yeast is not the same as yeast used for baking.

Beware of cystitis! I gave my cat products with brewers yeast in them when she injured her spine and became incontinent.  A month after her accident she developed inflammatory cystitis.  With all her complications, I did not get it and she periodically had dreadful bloody urine for a year before I figured out it was the brewers yeast.

Brewer's yeast is used in many foods and cat treats. Cats do derive nutrition from it. Of course as with any ingredient, any specific cat can be sensitive to it or be allergic to it.

I use Vetri-Lysine treats. Almost all of their cat supplements use brewer's yeast as the main base for flavor, and many cats love it.

Use Brewers Yeast in powder form, and mix a little bit of it in wet food once per day.  I have used this method with cats before, and it helps keep the fleas away.

I have found it to be wonderful.  My Mom's longest lived cat (23 years) , lived on steady diet of brewer's yeast.

As long as your cat isn't allergic to it, it is valuable.

brewers yeast is different than dough yeast.

Food to NEVER give your Cat... Yeast dough is one and it explains why here.
BTW... This link is from WebMd.com which is ran by Doctors.

Brewers yeast is different than dough yeast. They are different isomers of yeast. Active yeast, or dough yeast, which is typically purchased at any market is not what you want to give your cat!  You need to find it online or purchase it a more health conscious market like Mothers or Wholes Food. Not sure what state you are in, but maybe those aren't your organic type markets.

I've been giving my kitten for 2 solid months brewers yeast. He has no fleas nor any other health complications from what the vet or I have seen. He passed his check up to get neutered and vet said he was very healthy.

I started giving him the brewers yeast because my mom recommended this. She's been giving her cats this before flea medicine was a thing being formulated and made.

Yes, brewer's yeast by Lewis Labs offers a wonderful product. (1 tsp per day)

It is high in B12. I was taking it for years; my diet may have been lacking it since I am a vegetarian.

B12 is predominantly found in meat and that is what cats eat. It is a very important vitamin for cats nervous

system, and brain development, and aids digestion of proteins and fats, which are (should) be high in a cats diet.

Brewer's yeast also contains a vast amount of minerals which are necessary for vitamin assimilation.

As far as fleas are concerned, I always had indoor cats with no flea problem.

But now that I have a feral who is in and out.... (mostly out).... we will see. It is also very cold outside now so

I won't know about the flea effect until the warm weather comes.

I have a degree in nutrition but highly recommend a feline professional such as Lisa Pierson DVM for cat nutrition.
