Tabitha has been on Prozac for 6 years due to spraying in the house because I used to have a cat door in the living area through the front door and neighbourhood cats would come in.
I tried feliway, Bach flower drops in her water and keeping her inside a lot with a liitterbox and playing with her but accidents would happen. I even got a animal behaviour specialist in and got a plan written up. I was not seeing any major improvements so reluctantly put Tabitha on Prozac. It took a while to get the dosage right. She will also spit the pills out, I now crush the pills and coat then with butter to stop the spitting out. After putting her on Prozac I would get accidents every couple of months on the tin foil in the living area under the window. I decided to shut them out of the living area when I was at work or in bed so the cats only had access to the bedrooms and the bathroom. That helped a lot, I was seeing accidents every six months. Tabitha played more and went outside to the toilet and would spend long periods of time outside. The last accident I had was early this year.
If spraying does occur it happens in my spare bedroom on the tin foil underneath the window. Having new carpet helps too as it doesn't smell of the neighbourhood cats.
Tabitha vigorously plays each day, enjoys belly rubs, purrs a lot more and is a happier cat. She even made friends with the kitten next door. She goes to most of my visitors which means neighbours can feed her while I am away instead of putting both cats in the cattery.
Tabitha is a much better cat being on Prozac. She eats a bit slower and eats in a separate area than her sister because her sister eats quickly and will try to eat tabithas food.
I have a litterbox in the bathroom for Tabitha. But Tabitha is now preferring to go outside to the toilet and be outside for 8-10 hours which is something she would not do before Prozac. She would prefer to be inside and would only go out if I put her outside and then she could only cope with 2 hours. Any longer than that she would spray inside and hide under the bed.

Thank you very much for posting this update! It's wonderful to hear that Tabitha is doing so well now - you obviously made the right choice with the Prozac. That's such a difficult decision to make but sometimes it seems that's what it takes.

Many members consider using Prozac or other medication at some point in their cats' lives and it is never a decision made lightly. They will find your post very helpful as a guide to show them some of the positive benefits. Thank you again very much for providing this information! catman.gif
