Hello. I'm new here, and I just recieved a 6-7 week old kitten. I'm pretty sure it's a boy. I think I have come to a conclusion as to what I'm going to name him. I decided I didn't want him to have an ordinary name, but a unique name. I also wanted to name him after some historical personage. Which did I choose? Nero.
Although the name Nero has some malicious connotations, namely referring to his persecution of early christians and alleged tyranical acts, I believe the name is quite perfect. It did a bit of research concerning the name and the first thing I found out was that the word nero in italian means black. Concerning the actual name, I found out it was probably from Sabine origin, meaning "strong, vigorous". I fell in love with the name and, although I haven't come to a verdict yet, I'm almost sure his name will be Nero.
Should I pronounce it NAY-roh (like the italian) or NEE-roh? I think it is technically supposed to be pronounced NAY-roh in both cases, whether referring to the roman emperor's name or the italian word for black (with the exception of a slightly rolled 'r'), but since I'm an American and we usually pronounce it NEE-roh, I think I might go with that.
I also have another cat named tommy. It's a 6ish year old female. She doesn't get alone with the kitten very well...I have scratches to prove it!
Well, I fear the verbosity of this post is getting out of hand, so I will stop rambling.
