I am sure some of you heard of the airplane crash in Riverside, CA earlier this week. It was less than a mile from my home and I heard the emergency vehicles responding and helicopters circling all night. I walked past that street for two years on my way to the middle school near it and my sister in law went to the elementary school across the railroad tracks from it. So it is hitting a little harder and closer to home for me. I didn't actually know the homeowners or anyone involved but I was fielding phone calls and messages from friends and family most of the evening who were checking on me or me checking on them.

If you didn't, a small airplane crashed shortly after take off and killed 3 of the passengers on board. Two people were injured in the crash; one with severe burns and the other with minor injuries. It is a great tragedy for those on the plane and loss of life.My heart goes out to the families of those killed.

It is less reported on but two homes were also lost in the fire. One home was a young family with three kids and they lost everything; including their two dogs and a cat in the fire. The other home belongs to a 61 year old man who lived on that street his while life; his 12 cats are presumed killed in the fire. Below are the links to their GoFund Me fundraisers if you are able to help out any with these two families who have lost everything and are now in limbo waiting to see what happens next.

Even if you can't help if you can share the pages with friends or family who may want to help. I am sharing it here because there were 13 cats who perished in the fires and this is after all a cat site. I really can't imagine what the families are going through right now not only losing their homes but their pets too.

I'll go ahead and add the standard mod note about fundraising pages for you guys so the Mods don't have to.

Thanks for this, K - a chilling reminder that every cat colony is at risk every single day.

Eight years ago it happened here - three roads west of my own, and some distance to the south, when Continental Flight 3407, on the glidepath to Buffalo International Airport, went down in an ice storm:

A cat rescue fund was set up here by my Veterinarian (on the same road, and miles closer to the crash site) and a couple of local businesses, and our local Feral Cat Rescue right here in the hamlet, to trap, shelter, and in the case of the deceased homeowner, foster and later adopt-out the kitties.  Hopefully, though cooperative efforts, your community will help anyone or any pets affected.
