Hello,

We just recently adopted 2 brother cats from the shelter on this past Monday.  Today one of the cats jumped on the bird cage.  My gut reaction is the bird is in danger and something needs to be done. Any advice?  Thanks.

Cats are going to try to kill birds, especially if they're active and playful cats. Something to note is that cats are especially dangerous to birds because they have some gram negative bacteria in their saliva and under their nails that can cause a bad infection in birds very easily, with even just a nick or a scratch. So having a barrier is probably going to be the best way to ensure the bird stays safe. If you need to keep the bird in a separate, closed off room, that might be necessary. Otherwise, you need to keep the cage up high and away from anything the cat can climb or jump from to get to the cage.

When we had birds and some curious cats, we put contact paper (sticky on both sides) on the sides of the table that their cage sat on. The cats wouldn't jump on it and they left the birds alone.
