If anybody had a happy ending to a similar story please let me know how you got your cat to eat. We adopted a rescue cat about 12 days ago. He came from a hoarder's situation but was at a cats' rescue place for about a year. There he was with a bunch of cats in a small cat house. He is 18 months old but looks like a kitten, very small and thin. His original documents when he was rescued says he was not adaptable because of his manners. When we saw him he was very friendly and allowed us to pet him, even plaid a bit... so we assumed he was ok.
At home he did not look too stressed, walking around and checking every room. I know we should have given him only 1 room but he seemed pretty comfortable.
The only problem: I have not seen him eat, from the start. He did go to the box a few times to poop, but not every day and one of those times it was diarrhea. He does eat grass we bought and I saw him drink water, but no dry or wet food is touched. I am not even sure how he managed to go to the toilet.
We took him to a pet hospital one evening, 3 days ago, because he would go to the box and and did not do anything in there a few times. I really freaked out thinking something was abstracting his bowels...
Catching him at home was a nightwear because he is just terrified of human hands. We cannot even pat him at home, he just runs away. And this catching session completely ruined our little trust that we built for the last few days.
Anyway, we ran all the tests, except for the poop, he did not have any. His tests showed that he has a urinary tract infection. Something we did not expect at all! They gave him a slow releasing antibiotic and some pain meds that I have to give him every 8 hours with a small syringe. They also gave something for his apatite but it did not change anything.
We are back home and I have been given him pain meds, always a big deal with him hissing at me in his bed. But he still has not touched his food. Today I am starting to give him chicken broth with the same tiny syringe, he is terrified of a larger size. From my research they will have to put feeding tube in him if he doesn't eat any longer. I just cannot imagine us trying to catch him again for another vet's visit!...
I've decided to feed him as much as I can with the syringe to avoid any further stress with visits to vets. He seems to be receptive to it.
Are there any vets here? Can someone give me a few pointers on how to feed him more?
Forgot to mention, we tried every possible food to get his appetite going: tuna, kitten's food, baby food, cooked fresh meet and fish, ham, bacon... I have not tried raw meet yet.
We are also relaxing him with Feliway plug-in. He seems ok walking around and even plays with a laser but still not eating.
Thank you for reading!
