Forgive me for being a techno bozo but how do I put some ones username in a post so that it is clickable?

What is the flag symbol used for?

To "mention" a member so they get an alert, you need to type the "@" symbol and type their name (no space between). A box will popup with suggestions on username. Select the correct one.

A flag is for you to report an issue to the Moderators. If you see a problem with a post, please flag it for our attention.
