My cat is taking prednisolone for IBD. She seems very agitated but also very hungry which is good. She's only taking 1/4 of a 5 mg pill twice a day. Will most cats get used to this medicine in time?
Yes, pred helps many IBD cats. It does take awhile for the pred to work. Follow the vet's directions exactly on the treatment protocol. Most cats start at one dose for awhile and then the dose is slowly tapered off. Diabetes-like symptoms may occur at high doses but the symptoms are only temporary and as the vet decreases the dose over time, the symptoms go away.
Here are some web sites for more IBD treatment info:
Are you giving the pred pills with a Pill Pocket or something similar? That would make pill giving time easier.
Some people like to include supplements in their IBD cat's treatment. This may be bone broth or pet specific natural remedies / supplements or probiotics or other things. These can complement the vet treatment and are not necessary to give. Every cat is different so a supplement that works for one cat may not work for another.
