Hello!

I just became a first-time pet parent about three weeks ago. My kitty, Olive, is a British shorthair and is almost 13 weeks old. I have noticed that almost every single day my kitten has a dark-ish eye discharge at the corners of her eyes. Is this something I should be concerned about? She went to the vet just yesterday (I was at work so my fiancee took her) but the doctor didn't seem to be concerned about it. Additionally, is there anything I can do to prevent it? I try to get it out from her eyes but she hates it (obviously).

Any advice is much appreciated!

Congratulations on your new kitty!!  Sounds like regular eye boogers.  It's kind of like human "sleepy" you get in your eyes.  I just wipe it off with my finger.  (It's a "mom" thing! LOL) If the discharge is yellow or green or any other color, that's cause for concern and needs to be addressed by the vet ASAP as that indicates an infection.

Kittens wit a cold often with pouring eyes, can get this stuff in the eye corner Because of  the virus has made some damage to the tear canal.   To get rid of it,  Use eye drops that contain saltwater only. and that are packaged for single use (very important), without preservatives. The saltwater will rinse the eye and clear the tear canal. You will have to continue for a long time  Never touch the cat eye with your fingertips the bacterials on your fingers will make it worse. when wiping a cat eye use only clean eyewater on a clean soft paper napkin. one piece for each eye. you must keep it very clean to get rid of an eye infection.

I once had a half starved kitten follow me home.  He had the same  symptoms and while we were able to get rid of the cold the eye discharge remained.  Had a specialist over 100 mi away do minor surgery to open up the ducts and while it helped some the problem still remains.  Just saw a post yesterday that leads me to believe that this may be herpes.  Read that l-lysine may help control the outbreaks since it is an immune system booster.  Even if it isn't herpes I would think that it might with the infection.  It's worth mentioning to your vet.  I see mine next week and plan on bringing it up.

Thanks all!

I really appreciate your help. I'm really hoping it's just "eye boogers" like you say, stephanietx.

I will also look into buying Sodium Chloride drops for my kitty. I had no idea that was a thing, Ingrid!

And last but not least, I really hope it's not herpes (I honestly don't think it is because she was raised with her sisters), but I will ask my doctor to be sure. Thanks, jcornman!

Hi there !

I'm sure it's not herpes

my cat had a very similar issue she had red things and water from her eyes (I also thought those were boogers) !

So what I did as she was not willing to take eyedrops so first few day until she feels better take some tissue and apply cold water and clean Her eye softly while petting her gently

Then after a day day or try to put those drops in her eye if still not take a tissue and apply the drops on it and put it around her eyes and a little inside hopefully this will help!:)

Hope I helped:)

Forgot to add

I suppose those boogers are something like when we sleep we get sand in our eyes so that's what cats get!:)
