I feed my 6.5 week old kittens royal canin mother and babycat wet food. They love it, but I'm thinking about switching to another wet food for them because they BLOW UP their litter box. It's smells like a bad night after Mexican, Indian, and Chinese food altogether with hint of rancid pork :barfgreen:.
Is royal canin like this? Normally my cat's poos are tolerable (my grown girls are on Rachel ray nutrish) I don't want to start the little ones on dry food just yet, I don't want them becoming addicted to it.

Are the ingredients a cause for such foulness from them? Kinda hoping it's not just me experiencing this.

Poor quality ingredients = stinky poop IMO. Royal Canin isn't the best food out there. Look for a food that has a high protein content and that contains real meat and few fillers like grains. One brand you can try is Nature's Variety Instinct. There is kitten dry and canned.

Young kittens often have worms which can also cause stinky poop. When the kittens are a little older, be sure to have the vet deworm them.

I read kitten poop is generally smellier than adults' due to their intestinal flora still developing. And kitten wet food being high in protein and calcium.

I've introduced the new food to them. Nature's variety instinct smells WAAAY better. It has a subtle scent of tuna. The royal canin smells loud and makes my whole room smell and it lingers. I usually don't have a problem with wet cat food smells, but that was giving me a headache and I've been dealing with bad bouts of nausea as of late :barfgreen: I guess it's too entice cats into eating it? Unfortunately I still have to feed it to them so there stomachs won't be completely upset during the switch.
Their poop doesn't smell as bad either :) thank you LTS3 LTS3 for recommending me this food brand!

And isn't there some Purina pro plan flora supplements MissClouseau MissClouseau ? Or is that only for adults?

Fortiflora? I think it might be a good idea to consult a vet on this. Purina says Fortiflora is for kittens and adult cats but they don't give different instructions for kittens and adults about the amount which seems a bit bizarre to me. But I don't know enough on the topic.

Where do you think?
I know that you can adjust the fortiflora amounts and that the cat and dog versions are identical. Maybe just sprinkle a pinch on top of the food and mix it up to start. Increase if it seems too little. Worst I've seen it do is nothing at all.

One of our cats is on RC prescription renal food, wet and dry, and my husband commented on the smell in the litter box. I can't prove it is RC, but it is coincidental.

I think there might be something to the smelly poop related to RC - in my case the SO canned. Feeby has been eating both RC SO and Hill's C/D - in dry and canned. However, she has taken to rejecting her dry and last time I went to purchase cans, the store was out of the Hill's. So, she has only been eating the RC SO for the past few days and it does seem that her poop is smellier.

I am going back to the store to see if they have Hill's C/D back in stock - when she was eating both, I didn't notice any strong odor.
