We’ve been a 2 cat household right off the bat because we had adopted 2 brother kittens together, however recently we added a 3rd baby girl into the mix and now we have 3 cats!
I felt a little odd at first, thinking it was too many cats, but seeing their personalities grow was worth it.
What do you think? Is 3 indoor cats too many?

Probably not, to many that is. Well, if you were renting a single bedroom it might be a little crowded.
Many of the people here have more than one, some have many more than one. They are kind of like potato chips I guess, "you can't eat just one" is what the old add used to say.
Currently I have 3 who used to go outside all the time but since they have gotten older have decided to stay in. I think they feel more secure that way. I have 2 more who usually stay inside but also like going out and I let them when they want to. One used to stay in all winter and out most of the summer but this year she has not wanted to stay out all the time like she used to, which is fine with me. The last one loves being inside and outside and is often conflicted. He will want in and then out again and then in again. He has trouble understanding weather and why it is all wet outside but not inside. I also have 2 that are outside all the time and then finally some feral cats that hang around. How many is to many? Just depends.

I think a person's limits on cats are dependent on finances, space, and time. If you have enough of those things, the actual number doesn't matter. I don't care if someone thinks I'm a crazy cat lady. As long as my babies are well cared for and happy, then I'm happy. We have seven, btw.

We have 4 indoor-only cats. We have had as many as 5.

Fortunately, we have a large home so they have space to run around and get away from each other when they want some alone time.

We are retired. So, we have lots of time for them.

weebeasties makes a good point. Assess your finances, available space and time to spend with and caring for the cats. That should tell you how many cats you can provide a good home for.

We only have four now, after loosing our big Siamese Toby on 4-16-19. Five wasn't too many for my wife and me, because loosing just that one made our smaller type of house seem kind of empty.

I believe one could/should have as many as they can afford and can care for, but that all depends on several things. Pets of any kind are not inexpensive family members, and each one need attention, time, and money spent on/with them. Some more so than others.

Personally I wouldn't want less than two, but that's just me. What ever number works for any individual is how many one should have.

We have 3 all indoor only, but have had 4 before. We did have a discussion about adding a 4th to our home so our very nurturing yet timid kitty could have a cuddle bug to care for, but decided to wait a bit to see our new crew's personalities shine. We now realize that it's not necessary, as our timid little girl has really come out of her shell, I think in part because of our boys, and the two rambunctious boys are very gentile with her during play, cuddle with her and let her groom them.
We have an amazing family of kitties and are so lucky!

Most of us who probably has known "that person", with one dog, or one cat, and the animal is neglected and lives in the basement and is fed a bad diet and they're hostile to everyone because they're never around people. Worst thing is when people tease them (especially cats, because this gets big you tube ratings) to get a reaction and laugh about it.
Then you meet these folks that have 10+ cats (or dogs) and the animals lives are better than yours. Finances, space and time matters but so does over all dedication.

Nine.
Guess we're the nutters of the bunch
We're tied so we're nuts too lol! Had as many as 10 off and on, but we have decided that we can't go up anymore and must keep it at 9, very costly, we're getting older while they don't seem to be, they'll live for years yet the way they are going!

I often say "we have more hearts than brains" and Deb always says "I wouldn't have it any other way"   :runaround:

We have seven in a five bedroom, two bathroom house. All strictly indoor.
For the last 3 years we've had five, and I said "no matter what happens, we are NOT taking in anymore cats." Two months ago my fiancé and I went out to run some errands, while my mom and daughter were playing in the backyard. We came home and my daughter greets me with "look mommy! We found two little miracles hiding in the woodpile!" (I suspect someone dumped them in our yard, knowing we're cat lovers.)
I called our local humane society and I've been waiting two months for them to contact me...they put me on a "waiting list" since their shelter is completely full atm. Two months of having them and we're attached, and I can't bare the thought of sending them to the shelter where many cats have been sitting for YEARS waiting to find a home...guess we have seven now.
I just hope nobody else gets the idea to dump another cat on my doorstep!

I've got two. I only got my first cat around a year and a half ago and wasn't sure how the second one would go. After all, I live in a one bedroom apartment (a fairly big one, but still).

But after adding the second one, I'm glad. They're getting along and even starting to play together. And they're so different, but very lovable! I think first cat and I will both be better for the extra company, and I'll worry less about her being lonely and bored while I work through long graduate school hours.

The number of cats, whether indoor or outdoor depends on your finances as what one poster mentioned above.

We have 3 indoor cats here in Doha, and another indoor back home. When they leave the house, they are on harnesses. My husband said it's enough, as besides cats we also have 3 dogs and 2 budgies. LOL.

There are also 4 cats I feed outside but not mine, and belong to this neighbor who just decided to lock out her cats in this desert heat. They seem always hungry and I see their food bowls also always empty (yes, the owner put their food bowls outside! Not washed, not cleaned!) although she claims she puts kibbles for them daily.

All our cats have been indoors only, right now we have one. The most indoor cats we have had at one time are four. My husband is itching for another cat but I think our present guy is happy to have all my attention and devotion.;)

I have three, strictly indoor, two males, about 3 1/2 years old and a female, about fifteen months old. They're all fixed and get along quite well. They're in a 1350 square foot house, which doesn't seem to cramp them at all. Three seems a bit much, but I didn't have much choice on the adoption of the third. Her mama abandoned her under my car.

I will not have another indoor/outdoor cat, at least not at this house and probably not ever. Wombat's death hit me pretty hard, so this is not a judgement against other people, just accepting my own limitations.

Willow is my one and only, unfortunately, because of finances and landlords. I would prefer to get a second kitten ASAP because Tacy never did adjust to having Clark and then Cadie in the family. I'm not in a major city, but I hear that people are starting to wise up and have kitten socialization classes, which would keep the option to grow our families open for those of us raising only kittens and generally be healthier than living without any contact with their own species.

I've lived in multicat households more often than not and look forward to reading about yours.
