Hi all, this is my second time posting. So my cat was due for her rabies booster back in march 2019. Things to busy and I forgot to schedule one then, unfortunately she scratched me today. Should I be worried about rabies infection since I am late on her booster?she is strictly indoor cat and received her 1st rabies shot in March 2018. Sorry for the stupid question. She has Vet appt next week (the soonest i can get her in) but i am worried. Thanks all

If she is indoors only, and her saliva didn't go into your skin (like through a bite), I don't think you have anything to worry about. Hopefully some more knowledgeable people will chime in but I really think you're fine.

Even though vaccines have recommended booster periods, most tend to provide continued protection past their booster date. Added to that your cat is indoor only and you don't mention any wild animals coming in so her risk of having it is extremely low. All this means, your risk of rabies from your cat scratching you is pretty much non existent.

For an indoor cat the rabies shot is more preventative in case the cat gets out or a wild animal gets in. So long as neither of these things happened there is unlikely anything to worry about. Also the shots don't lose effectiveness after exactly one year (they are good for at least a year), so a couple months is not likely going to make a difference.

Some vets believe rabies vaccines last much longer, 7-9 years or even longer, so I wouldn't worry much. Just keep an eye on the scratch to make sure it doesn't get infected.

Like everyone else has said, you cat is indoors only and hasn't came into contact with any animals affected by rabies so you are fine. Felix (my cat) hasn't been vaccinated since he was a kitten 8 years ago and he's perfectly fine. It's not a big deal so my vet doesn't push for it.

Now, if she had gotten out perhaps and was gone for a long time, then came back with a bite mark or several and was acting weird, then you would probably have to worry. But even then, she had it last year so she must still have some, or perhaps complete protection from the rabies virus.
