I've been feeding Rawz Turkey canned (pate). Kitty likes it but just picked up 3 cans from a different store. These have a different lot number and earlier best by date than the stock I have and they also have a different texture. The pate in the cans I have been getting are very uniform looking. The food in the newer purchase is more marbled looking and not quite as smooth. Smells the same and he eats it but clearly doesn't appreciate it as much as what he's used to. He doesn't always clean his plate like he does with the more uniformed looking Rawz. If I use the immersion blender to puree it a little bit he seems fine with it. Something I'd rather not have to do. I haven't seen any differences like this with the Stella and Chewy's "canned" foods. But, I'm kind of new to feeding canned so I'm not sure if it's common for texture inconsistencies to exist from lot to lot.

Is this fairly common or no?

Yeah, I think so.
I feed Fancy Feast Classic Paté, and sometimes they’re more firm and dry, especially the turkey and giblets paté, and the kitties don’t like it as much when it’s more firm and dry.

I guess the immersion blender may get some use. :)

Thanks

I'm currently feeding Rawz turkey, I've used it the past two years off and on, only the turkey recipe. I've noticed a difference in texture with almost every batch / best buy date. The texture is either very soupy, mush or firm, like meat loaf, my cats prefer the latter texture.

I mentioned to Rawz customer service last year when I contacted the company regarding the difference in texture and was told that the food texture varied from batch to batch. This is the primary reason I don't buy it regularly, it's too bad because it's a fantastic canned food otherwise.

It might help to feed a variety of canned foods. That way your kitty might not be offended if something's a little different.

Thanks for the info on the response from the company regarding the texture.

Regarding the cans that have the food with the more marbled appearance and coarser texture ... if I use the immersion blender on them, I obviously end up with a uniform, fine puree. My cat seems to enjoy that as much as the more uniform lots of Rawz. But, the interesting thing is that I can mix this Rawz "puree" 50/50 with his homemade food and he'll clean the plate. Normally I have to mix canned at a ratio of 2:1 with his homemade. The pureed Rawz ends up being kind of like gravy for his homemade food. I can live with that !

Thanks

The last case of Rawz Beef that I bought (which included the infamous half-empty can with a dried-out hockey puck banging around inside) was very firm, almost hard. Sylvie still loved the taste of the food, though, so when I dished it out I added a couple of teaspoons of warm water and mushed it all together thoroughly so that it had more of a pate texture.

I have notes in my phone from a previous thread about this that the Best By 7/2021 batch of turkey (bottom of the can) can be more watery than usual. I gently shake these cans before buying. The extra soupy cans will sound like it. The 11/2021 batch of rabbit is also firmer than usual. I feed turkey almost exclusively these days. But if I do have to feed rabbit, I find mixing in a pump of salmon oil makes it less firm and also more appealing to her. But then I have to make sure that if I'm feeding her more than 1 can per day, that I mix her food with food without oil added so she doesn't get too much oil in a day. Otherwise, I get softer poops.

Despite the batch inconsistencies, she still does best on Rawz vs anything else.

Interesting. So far I've only encountered 3 cans of the more marbled looking food. Two other cans with the same date are uniform and softer, to my surprise because I expected them all to be the same. It's a 2021 date but not sure of the month.
