So my boy goes out in his harness daily. The ground is crushed granite but is real soft/broken up underneath my bedroom window. He digs up the ground, pees, buried it..... then rolls around in the dirt over it or right by it. Why?????

When he goes on walks further around my apartment’s gardens he just pees (sometimes burying it) and leaves. No rolling around. (He is flea free, so that is not a factor.)

He likes to roll around in sand and dirt when he can. He just doesn’t usually pee first then roll.

Hi. I have no idea other than at that particular location he likes the dirt. Has he ever rolled in the dirt at that location without peeing there first? Perhaps, there is another cat that frequents that particular location and so your cat peeing in that place and then rolling in the dirt there as well - is like double-duty in covering up the scent of another cat?

The dirt is soft and rollable (I guess) one foot out, the length of the apartment building. He likes rolling around in dirt but has no problem squatting over ground cover to pee on his walks. He pees dig dig digs to cover it with 1-2 inches of dirt then 3-6 inches away he starts rolling around. The spot he is doing it in, no other animal goes there that I know of. (People tend to keep their pets from going near someone’s patio or window when they walk them. His spot is right under why window by my patio. All pets are on leashes.) There is a cat in the apartment on the other side of his dirt spot. However I do not let him cross over the line to go on their patio/concrete square and their cat is an indoor only cat.

I read, I thought, I got nothing except he's a guy. But I want to see what others think.

It could be a “mine, mine mine!” kind of a thing - Marking the dirt because he loves to roll in it and is claiming it. Or it could just be kitten silliness, like playing in the litter box.

If it's his first stop, I wonder if he's covering himself in dirt to mask his scent so a predator smells dirt not tasty cat.

Cats rolling in dirt outdoors is similar to dust bathing for indoor cats that roll in their litter boxes.

From what I gathered is that dust bathing means several things.

One is scent marking and that's why you see them pushing their cheeks, chin, top of their heads and tails as these parts of the body have scent glands as what susanm9006 susanm9006 mentioned 'It's mine, mine, mine!
Also if you notice how your cat rub against your legs when they greet you or rub against furnitures.

Two, dust is beneficial to them as it has good digestive bacteria (which I don't understand this part as in good bacterial in the places where they pee and poop? :headscratch: :dunno:) As they lick their body during grooming, they ingest the dust and supposedly good for the body system and such.

Third, rolling helps them reach certain parts of their body they can't reach to scratch and also get rid of some loose fur. And some cats find comfort and safe while in the litter box.

Your cat covers his own pee and poop so that other cats doesn't find out that he's here and roll in it just like putting on a camouflage outfit but pees further down and does not cover is to mark his presence to warn other cats, 'Watch Out!

My boy rolls in his litter box a few times everyday and he every time I top up his litter box with fresh litter or changed a new box with fresh litter, you can find him rolling in it

I keep his litter box as clean as possible, scoop pee clumps big and small and broken up ones everyday and scoop his poop immediately if I'm at home. So far, he doesn't roll in it when poop is present.

Tabbytom you might be right. He is a big scaredy cat who is super attached to me (his ‘mom’ since I fostered him as a baby.)

He is pretty confident in his ‘yard’ since only my neighbors patio and mine are connected to that part of the communal yard. However people often walk by to walk through gap in the hedge to walk their dogs on the golf course or to take out the trash (my patio is in the back of my building.) When people walk by he either freezes behind one of my large pots or just sits their by the ground cover crawly bush thing. I’m trying to get him used to other people and he kinda knows some. He gets treats for being within 10 feet of new people (the good Sheba stick treats!)
The ‘yard’ area. Hard to believe that stuff that looks like crappy dirt is expensive crushed granite!

Thanks everyone!
(OK the middle one is just a cute one of my baby cat. He is 8 months old, he is just a small sized kitty.)

Wow, I just got lost in the thought of walking the dog on a golf course. I figured if you tried that the golf powers that be would send an army of caddies out to chase you away. I really think a dog would appreciate it more than a golfer. I've only looked at them from the street.

There is a path people walk their dogs on and a few residents slip in right before the sprinkler turns off as the sun is setting.
