Hey everyone,

My cats urine results came back, its turns out it is more serious than we had expected.
After he has completed his three week course of anti biotics he is to go back for another urine test.

His results are:
4 + blood
3 + protein
3 + whitecells

Has anyone any understanding of this please? Or have an idea what this could lead too?

Any help would be really appreciated I'm extremely worried as we had to get us sister put down due to epilepsy.
He is nearly 2 years old.

Right now, while this is somewhat concerning, it is PROBABLY simply an infection that will respond to the antibiotics. IF that is the case, this may well be a one-off. That happens in cats, as it does in humans. He may never have another issue. One thing you can do to help insure his future kidney and bladder health is, if he is on dry food, switch him to canned food, for the additional liquid.

Now, if the issue isn't resolved, we can revisit this later on. There are so many things that COULD happen, but most of them are manageable! Don't panic over this just yet. Let the meds to their work, reassess, and go from there.

And try, try, try to remain calm. Your emotions will affect your cat. They are little energy sponges, you know. SHOULD this be something like FIC (Feline Idiopathic Cystitis, which simply means repeated kidney/bladder infections with no known cause), it is known to be stress related...DEEP BREATHS for right now!

You are a long way from needing to be more than ordinarily concerned, and you are not alone in this anymore.

Hi mamanyt1953 thank you so much for your reply.

My vet is very straight and he said that this is serious, not something any owner ever wants to hear but he also said he was surprised by the results as he looks like a healthy cat, good coat, eyes etc...

I am petrified it could be something genetic from his parents.

Are kidney conditions manageable? Pain wise I mean? I couldn't bare my boy in pain!!

I didn't realise that result could just be an infection . I was shocked with the news and everything went over my head except those numbers...

His diet has been changed but he's not liking it so I'm gonna go and get tinned kidney friendly food after consulting with the vet.

MANY kidney conditions are manageable, both in terms of pain and in terms of keeping your cat as healthy as possible. ALL kidney infections (and diseases) are potentially very serious, but most can be handled. It's going to take some time before you know exactly what is going on. Even with the best doctors, medicine is as much art as it is science, since EVERY LIVING BODY is different. But, as I said, you are not alone with this now. We'll be with you every step of the way, advising as best we can (we're NOT vets, and we can't diagnose, but we do know cats, and we can advise and suggest!).

The most common deaths in cats are kidney related. I was listening to a talk about cats and diet and the vet stated that something like 3 out of 4 cats die of some kind of kidney issue. The main issue is that many vets push dry food which even if your cat drinks enough water they are still in a low grade dehydration. I am dealing with some issues with a 10 year old cat and only being on dry her entire life.

Wishing you the best and good vibes!!!!

The trick with kidney issues is catching them early, and managing them properly...you're making a start at this!

Has he had blood work done? There are blood work results that show issues with the kidneys.

that may at least partly be because 75% or more of elderly cats develop kidney disease.

Its so sad. :( Even young cats have this issue. I know many people who even have cats for years may not know that cat's need water added to their food or a call wet diet. I hope things change.

Yeah, hes actually much better in himself today it could be the antibiotics kicking in. We've food kidney friendly food that he likes, urinary sachets and I stocked up on beef etc and have ordered some rabbit as a change for him.

Not yet, so far just urine.
We're gonna see what the results are from the second urine test, then get a second opinion but bloods will be arranged soon.
I want a full check over on him.

YAY! Glad that things are looking somewhat better! Finding kidney-friendly food that he likes is half the battle!

Hey everyone so....

Kevin finished his antibiotics on Sunday and has being peeing normally for about 1 week give or take a day. He had his second urinalysis today - a nightmare to get with non absorbent litter.

The results came back no blood or white cells thank God. But his pH level was 7 which is high and there was a small amount of proteins.

Now he has been on an only raw diet or urinary wet foods. But he broke ( hes extremely talented at sneaking) into the kitchen when the other two cats were having some nuggets and ate a small amount of them.
So I'm.hoping that may have raised the pH levels and is the reason proteins showed up... course I forgot to mention this, but left a message to tell them.

He will.continue to be tested monthly until.all is clear then maybe every 3 months for peace of mind.

Big challenge I have now is weaning the girls from the dry food, one in particular is putting up a serious fight. But thay stress will be worth it and is nothing to what we went through with Kevin.

So thanks again to everyone who answered me. You helped me more than you know. Xx

Weaning cats from dry food is horrific in some cases. I'm STILL working on it, and have been for a LOOOOOOOONG time, since I have one of those cats who will starve herself if given anything but her beloved Friskies kibble. Since she has had one bout with hepatic lipidosis, I dont' dare let her go longer than 48 hours without eating. It's a work in progress. Patience, as with all things cat, is the key!

My girl is like that aswel, I mean she will turn her nose up to beef, chicken , even treats.
I used to have that kind of proud mammy moment when she did thinking she knows whats good but now I'm like, eat something else, please.

How long have you been working on the weaning? Did you try the juices on the kibble? Or mixing some wet with dry?

I'm currently putting water in with the nuggets, then I give in and give her a small amount of dry.
