As a cat/pet person, I just have to recommend this video game. Even if most of the members here are non-gamers... I just have to! It deserves a mention! It’s just that incredible.
It’s called The Last Guardian, and it’s for PS4. Hear me out: you play as a young boy who befriends a giant cat-bird-dragon creature and together you must escape an abandoned, enchanted city. The gameplay consists of simple puzzles and journeys through the gorgeously designed city. At the start of the game, the creature is wounded and wild and doesn’t let you near it. (Later, you learn it and the rest of its kind have been cruelly conditioned to fear and attack humans.) Throughout the game you slowly build trust in each other and form a bond. You can feed it, pet it, ride it, care for it when it’s wounded, play and splash in the water with it, teach it commands, cuddle it, and nap under its wings.
I don’t know how they did it, but this creature feels SO real and lifelike. Its movements and vocalizations and the way it interacts with you is really astounding for being a game. I cried 3 or 4 times throughout the game, but by the end I was a sobbing mess (I made my brother and my aunt play it and they were also sobbing messes!). The ending is just heartwrenchingly good.
Game-wise, it’s not perfect—the controls are clunky and the puzzles can be frustrating... but the emotional aspect completely redeems it. The portrayal of the bond we humans form with our creatures is just beautiful.
Here is a clip of one of my favorite scenes. The boy is unconscious (so you as the player cannot move) and the creature believes he is dead. The loyal creature mourns you and anxiously tries to revive you as best it can... then the pure joy when you wake up! It never fails to make me teary, mostly because it reminds me of my pets, both dogs and cats.
