my cat has recently begun a new.. hobby.... :sigh: chewing every wire she can find. i am worried about her getting electrocuted. i have no clue why she has started doing this, i’ve never had this problem before. but within the past two weeks or so she has chewed 5 or 6 cords! when i try to fuss her, she kind of just stares at me. (you know, that look our cats give us when we all knowing the fussing won’t help). does anyone have advice on this? i can’t exactly rid the house of wires, so is there any way to help prevent her from doing this? i don’t want her to hurt herself. thanks in advance.

First how old is she? She may be teething. Buy cat chew toys whether she is teething or not, to give her an alternative to chewing wires.

Second create one cat room and buy cord covers (like critter covers.) It might be worth trying a bitter lemon spray. Until you can stop her chewing having keep her in her kitty room unless she is supervised.

If she isn't teething and the vet says her teeth are ok, then it might be PICA.

It might be from boredom. My Aby used to chew on electrical cords, too, until I got him a friend to play with. Consider getting another cat or increase the amount of playtime.

Use cord covers. A cheap way is to buy aquarium air line tubing, slitting the tube lengthwise, and tucking the cords inside. Hardware stores have thicker clear tubing, even reinforced ones, in bigger diameters if you have a bunch of cords that go together.

Similar advice to LTS3: my kittens love chewing wires, so I bought some PetCords (links below). They come in multiple sizes and are pre-slit.

Your average auto supply store may also have pre split cord covers as they’re often used in cars to protect wires. One of my cats loved them and chewed them his entire life

We have had some cord chewing with our kitten. If she does that, I squeeze by hand inbetween her mouth & the cord to stop the chewing, push the cord out of the way, then show her a toy , or interact with her in some other way. I have learnt when she is likely to want to chew, so around that time, I give her a pen to bite on. Also we have a regular human toothbrush for her to bite. The toothbrush has become part of our morning grooming routine.
