For Calcifer, it was the bowl photo for me and the bowtie one for my wife. His foster agreed that he would be the best fit from the litter. His name was originally Kiwi and he came from a home with 3 older resident cats.

I have a different contribution to this thread, which includes no actual picture. Just a mental picture I will never forget.

Willy showed up outside, completely skin-and-bones. I've never seen an animal that skinny and emaciated. And he was obviously sick.

I couldn't not adopt. And that's when I became a cat owner for life.

Another sort of photo - a professional one from a breeder. But it was not a picture of her own pedigrees - just a cat she'd rescued from an elderly relative who had been trying to make money from kittens and was now unable to look after herself let alone cats.
I fell in love with the photo - the price (neutered, vaccinated - no flees or worms) was particularly cheap (less than the cost of neutering!) The breeder was not looking to make a profit just the right person to take good care of Luise, who had not been accepted by her own, very diverse collection of cats.
Contrary to her photo, Luise was very thin when I met her. She was still recovering from her final set of kittens, had been shaven and recently neutered - but was still a beautiful cat. She is now my Woolly Bear and is capable of impressing even the most die-hard cat-haters by her friendly, but bold nature.

To follow up on my post above, about my mental picture of Willy... this is the picture I look at now -- 8 years later and much healthier than when I found him -- that continues to convince me I made the right decision to adopt.
As almost every one of the cats in my life (starting from when I was born into a family including our beloved 3-year-old cat) have been directly rescued (and the others, adopted from friends or others) I can attest to the fact that EVERY adoption is a good decision when you have unconditional love for cats.

I've told you this before, but I never owned a cat before him, nor knew I'd even like cats, until he showed up. He made me discover that unconditional love.

As a dog person from childhood (which I still love, too), I was one of those people with cat stereotypes, like "they just ignore you" and "they don't love you."

Willy is the most loving guy I've ever known, and I've since been around other cats, too, which helped to change my perspective. I'm definitely only rescuing from here on out. I've learned a lot about how many cats need adoption, pretty much anywhere you live.

I had lost my Monkey girl a few months earlier. She was my heart. Yoshi was only 14mt and a wild thing that needed company so I began looking on petfinder to test my readiness. A few pics in I came across Sqeeker and though "he'd get along great with Yoshi" but I knew I wasn't ready. I talked to my partner who said Yoshi needed him. Every few days I went back and to his post. He was at the closest petsmart so I visited him everyday for a week. He hid the whole time yet I was drawn to him for Yoshi. I still wasn't sure. How could I adopt a cat that won't let me touch them? The volunteer said I could take him on a trial basis. My partner said it was up to me.

I took him home at noon. Put the carrier down, Yoshi came over, and they made happy noises. I let Sqeek out. There was immediate acceptance and friendship very soon after.

15yrs later Sqeeker still has limited use for humans. I guess the trial basis is up.

My two black cats found us, so no pics to draw us in. We woke up one morning and there they were, both of them together on our front porch. They were 4.5 months old, both neutered, both microchipped, one in each window on either side of the front door. We still have no idea how they got there or why they stayed there. But we were finally able to track down the original owner after much sleuthing and she asked us to keep them, so we did. Best thing that ever happened.

The first one was Beau’s pictures from his foster mom. He was a small little fluff with a personality I adored. The bottom picture is Lucy soon after we took her in. She was found by my husband at his work. She was a sick kitten when we found her but now she’s so much healthier and happier! I mean who could resist that face 😍

No picture. I adopted the cat that was huddled in the back of her cage, as far away from humans as possible. Her food was in the front and she was doing her best to stretch out her paw and hook a piece without getting too close. So I started picking up pieces and gently pushing them back to where she was.
