Almost discarded "Dracula" because a possible cat or kitten came up in a context which turned my stomach - but it was a red-herring - things fortunately turned out differently - but not a better outcome for the poor sparrows. Did we, animal-lovers, really select this book? What on earth were we thinking about? For the moment, let's change the subject back to food!

I'm reading a chapter where the action takes place in Whitby (on the coast of NE-England, not far from Leeds where I studied). Local food includes kippers (smoked herrings) which, if I remember correctly, were very salty, full of bones and eaten for breakfast. Today there is an ice-cream parlour in Whitby selling ice-cream which Dracula would have loved: "Gothic blackcurrant and liquorice flavour topped with dark chocolate sprinkles and dripping strawberry sauce!". No comment!
Other Whitby specialities include "humble pie 'n mash", ale, gin and good old fish and chips.
My mouth is watering but I'm not qualified to provide you with any of these - if anyone is prepared to do the cooking, I'll do the tasting!

Ewww... thanks for the heads up.

FWIW, I voted for Jane Eyre. :)

We can have this for breakfast:

Today's August 1st, so for anyone not started reading it yet, it's time for Dracula. 🧛‍♂️
Hopefully it won't be too scary or disturbing.

I’ve read it many times since my early teens and didn’t ever find it scary. I also don’t remember any cats in it except someone asking for one, which doesn’t happen.

No, I’m not that fond of it these days and remember it too well (now if you’d asked me during my Goth phase thirty years ago that would’ve been another matter, lol!) 🦇🦇🦇
Since you remember it well, do feel free to join us in the discussion part later in the month.

And if you're still a reader these days, maybe we'll pick a book that interests you in a future month. So watch for the threads. The September one, in fact, will be posted in the next day or so.

I borrowed the e-book of Dracula from my library a couple days ago. This version has a "foreword" written in 2005 by Elizabeth Kostova, which though spoiler-y, also piqued my interest. So I started reading it today.

Thanks to gilmargl gilmargl 's warning, I will refrain from reading it at night, so I have another totally different book on the go, which I can read as my bedtime story.

Anyone else start it yet?

I've almost finished. Without giving too much away, I found the beginning rather creepy and then when talk of a cat or kitten came up I was ready to give up. But things improved in as far as it became more unreal and more like the Dracula, with bats and vampires I'd grown up with - at least in films and comics. So don't give up too soon - it's definitely worth reading. 🧛‍♂️🧛‍♀️🦇🦇🦇🦇
