During the past year, my hair has gotten progressively tangly when I've washed it. And even when I try to comb it dry, it's tangly. I know I need a good cut again and that will help the ends from tangling. But that won't help it when I've washed my hair. I use a mix of ShimmerLights conditioner, It's a 10 conditioner, and a Tresemme deep conditioner. And still get really bad tangles.

Has anybody ever used Oribe Run-Through Detangling Primer? It's a little on the pricey side, but from the reviews, it's supposed to work well on tangles. I bought some and will try it this week. Any other ideas for a good detangler that really works?

I'm really getting tired of fighting with my hair. It's gotten to the point where I almost hate to wash it anymore because of tangles.

We wash our hair to remove dirt and oil. Then reapply an oil to add shine and de-tangle. I decided this was counter-intuitive, for me. My hair is not especially oily, so I shampoo once a week. Afterwards I use a wide tooth comb to section the still wet hair - reaches halfway to elbow - and comb out. Let dry before brushing and put up in a ponytail with a scrunchy. When my hair was very long - could hold the ends in my hand with a straight outstretched arm - it was kept braided day and night.

How often do you wash your hair? Perhaps your shampoo is too strong.

The Detangler Conditioner

I have not used this. Many years ago I worked with a woman who's daughter was biracial and her daughter's hair was also long and thick. She said that this was the only thing that worked for her daughter. This woman was frugal out of necessity but she spent the extra for this for her daughter because it worked.

I’ve used a Cricket brush for years. I see in the description that it really pushes the static-free and “volumizer” features, but I find that it slides right through my hair and helps with tangles. I use it when my hair is dry. When my hair is wet, I use a wide-toothed comb.

I have be dying my hair for many years and it has caused hair that easily tangles. I use all sort of detanglers and even stuff for hair frizzies like Frizz Ease. Someone told me that since I dye my hair I should stay with Argan/Morrocan Oil. It has helped with the both issues. It use it in a spray and have also used it in shampoo and conditioner. Ogx shampoo & conditioner with Moroccan Oil is what I use. It is a good shampoo and it is reasonably priced. Hope that helps.🙂

My hair can get very tangly; I find that my Wet Brush really works.
This is the link for their Pro Detangler:

I have baby-fine hair, which hasn't been cut in over a year, and it gets extremely tangled and matted. I saw the Wet brush at Safeway and grabbed one, and I just love it. It gets rid of the tangles painlessly, wet or dry. I ended up buying a second brush to keep in the car, and a third for Jasmine! (Note: it doesn't get rid of Jasmine's mats, but it's excellent at preventing them and she actually enjoys being brushed with it.)

Also, the best conditioner I've found is the Infusium Leave-In spray. It doesn't make my hair oily, just soft and easier to brush.

I already bought the Oribe detangler. I started using One United again, but have found that it's not working as well as it did. I don't know why I didn't think of Paul Mitchell because I already use the Super Skinny Serum (I switch between that and Aquage Silkening Oil Treatment) and love that, just not for tangles.

I did buy the Cricket brush and it should be here this week.

I do need a good trim; that would really help the ends. I'll have to make an appointment.

Our water is very hard with lots of iron and sulphur. We have a water system in the basement with reverse osmosis.

If the Oribe doesn't work out, I have some other ideas, thanks to you guys. Your suggestions are much appreciated! Thank you!

Odd question: How do you wash your hair? Also, what is the texture of your hair?

Because hair that is damaged and/or dry tends to tangle more due to the roughened cuticle, I would personally recommend doing a deep oil treatment before you wash your hair at least once a month. I mix lavender oil and rosehip oil together to use on my scalp (mimicking how I wash it). I then take OUAI hair oil and generously apply it to my hair in sections, going from root to tip. (Anything with baobab oil or argan oil will work well for roughed hair cuticles. I just like the smell of OUAI.) Let it sit for at least half an hour. I have left it in all day before when my hair really needs it. Then wash it out as normal.

You can also try adding aloe vera powder to your conditioner. I use that more often in the summer.

My hair reaches my hips and is on the slightly less than average side of thickness. I wash it a couple of times a week using Gliss shampoo and conditioner. When washing, you really only have to wash close to the scalp unless you know you have something in your hair. I use the pads of my fingertips to wash five-inch sections of my scalp and hair, removing my fingers after the five inches as to avoid tangling that section with the next. After a good rinse, I apply a generous amount of conditioner to the bottom 15 inches (so, just under half the length.) I let it sit for a couple of minutes before doing a quick rinse. Then, I take a wide-tooth comb and start combing while there is still conditioner residue in my hair. (Starting at the bottom and working up to the scalp for each section.) Then I rinse again. After blotting my hair half-way dry, I comb it again. Because my hair tends to be on the dry side, especially in the colder months, I use hair oil on 3/4th of the length. I also wear it in a bun—no bands or pins—when I sleep, and I have a silk pillowcase.

Elphaba09 Elphaba09 My hair has always been thick and coarse and wavy. And frizzy. When I was working, I would wash it every other day, sometimes every day, and blow it out because blowing it dry is the only way to reduce the waves. Since I retired, I'm down to twice a week, simply because I really hate dealing with the tangles. I will say that, since I stopped coloring the roots, it has really calmed down......but now it's gotten really tangly. Go figure. I did try several oil treatments in the past and they really didn't do much. I rarely (maybe twice since I retired) blow my hair dry anymore. And for some reason, I'm starting to like the waves. Rick loves the waves; he really does!

ETA: A couple years ago, I started losing hair and it scared the crap out of me. We (stylist and I) think it was the WEN shampoo that caused it. I stopped using it and, after a few months, it stopped coming out. But I've also noticed that, since I stopped coloring my roots, my hair seems to be growing in again, too. I have "baby" hairs now, along the front of my scalp around my face. I'll take them! I take 5,000 of Biotin twice a day. Don't know if that helps or not.

Peanut butter, works every time. Best to do before a shower because obviously you'll need to wash your hair after.

How is your water? Do you have a water softener? I have found when mine isn’t working properly my hair is horrible to work with, regardless of product.
Same here. When my long hair starts getting more difficult to comb after a shower, I check the filter on my shower head and the salt level in the softener.

Sounds a bit like my husband's hair, although his is more curly than wavy. (I would put it at a 3A, while mine is 2A at most.) We have been together for 12 years, and I finally convinced him to start using conditioner last year! I recently started using baobab oil on his hair, and the change is amazing!

I have heard horrible things about WEN! It certainly sounds like it was the issue! (I have heard similar things about Curly Girl.)

I'll second Elphaba09 Elphaba09 's use of a silk pillowcase. I got one a couple of months ago and love it. It was definitely a splurge, but I think it helps. And it's heavenly to sleep on!
My husband got one, too! These are the latest ones we purchased:

My sister uses a detangler for her 3B/3C hair! I just thought to ask her. Here are her two favorites. They also seem to work on all types of hair.(And, glancing at the ingredients, I would again suggest adding aloe vera powder to your conditioner. I also still recommend baobab oil.)
