They don't like it. Most cats don't like to be held, especially against their will. And forcing your face to theirs, while being held, they see as a threat. A threat that will soon turn to claws and teeth to get away.
You need to stop.
Let them come to you for cuddles and pets. Never force the issue.

I agree with kashmir64 kashmir64 - while it’s not abuse, it’s certainly violating their trust.

For me, I try to interact and cuddle my kitties in the way they like. For Olive, it actually means I can hug and kiss her, surround her in my arms. She leans into me, purrs, and reaches out if I pull away. But if I pick her up, she struggles and wants to get down. So I don’t pick her up for snuggles even if I want to.

Gohan likes to be pet, but I would never dream of hugging him or confining him in that way.

If you keep doing things that they find frightening or annoying, they will become less affectionate. Imagine how you would feel if someone grabbed you and hugged you when you didn’t want it. You would start to avoid them and wouldn’t want to be near them. The more you respect your cat’s way of interacting, over time it’s possible they may allow more intimate contact. For now, let them choose the time and manner. You will be closer with them in the long run.

It's not abusive but it could certainly be traumatic. Some cats like cuddles and kisses but most don't. If I tried to grab my cat and kiss her she would tear off my face, and rightfully so. They're struggling and meowing trying to tell you to stop. If you push them too far they may use teeth and claws to get the point across because they're scared and uncomfortable. Gentle pets without the hugs and kisses would be a good alternative.

My cat would lick my face all day long if I let her and will sit in front me at eye level any chance she gets and paw at me until I pay attention to her so I don't even think twice when she is trying to get away and I hold her and kiss her to death hahaha.

I wouldn't though if she hated it or seemed upset. I wouldn't call it abuse but they don't always understand you are showing affection.

They're not humans. They don't show love in the same way we do. They are showing you love by running up to you and purring. Pet them and play with them, and they'll probably become even more affectionate. Force *anything* on them, especially, face-to-face contact, and they'll become less affectionate. (That's actually how it works with people, too.)

If you did that to a human, it could be deemed an assault.

If its not consensual, its not ok.

I understand. I hug, hold and kiss them against their will sometimes. But it just depends on frequency. If you kiss them a couple of times a day no that's not abuse. I try not to do it too often since I know they don't like it. Luckily i have 3 cats so i can spread it out haha.

I think it's only right and fair to avoid doing the things you know they don't like. You should be able to accept your cats for who they are, and how they want to live. They are not tools to be shaped to your will. I know you mean well, but they trust you. Please don't betray that trust by repeatedly alienating them. They don't exist just to love you when you want it.

Most cats do not want to be kissed. Us humans have to WAIT for them to kiss us. That is the universal law in the feline world. Lol. This is how dogs and cats differ.

My Bourbon abhors to be kissed. When my husband attempts, she immediately gives him a left and right hook like a female boxer. My Barley, though sweet as he is, also does not like to be kissed. So I guess cats do not really like this show of affection on our part.

:hithere:I kiss the top of their heads sometimes. I don't think they adore it but they don't seem to mind it either. Maybe you could try that? I think any kind of hugging might feel like being grabbed to them. I know if I did that to Raja she would squirm away quickly. Mizu doesn't mind being scooped up here and there as much. I know you love your cats. Might just need to find a way to show them affection in a way that they appreciate and understand.

If you grab then and hold them when they are trying to fight you, you're teaching them that's it's safe to let anyone grab them. They need to know they can really let go and rip the ever loving out of someone who grabs them. People, other than you, who grab them probably won't have the best of intentions toward them.

Save the grabbing for when you have to put them in their carriers to go to the vet or to move.
