Greetings! Happy Tuesday :hellocomputer:

What fads or trends did you have during your Middle/High School years?

Bad, dumb, weird, fun, all of that stuff.
I am born in the 80's, raised in the 90's, teen in the early 2000's :walk:

I recall....

- Everyone was wearing ties for a few months. It was a time where Avril Lavigne exploded into popularity with her first hit.
- Yoyo's
- Fingerboards (Little miniature skateboards)
- Platform Shoes or Sandals
- AIM (AOL Instant Messenger)
- TY Beanie Babies
- The OC

And if I were to go younger, Furby and Tamagotchis were huge. And of course The Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys.

Admittedly the only ones I was willing to partake was Tamagotchi and AIM. I had a fun time with my Tamagotchi! And enjoyed some Spice girls as a kid.

I am sure there were many more and probably obvious other big ones, but just remembering what I know off the top of my head.

How about you guys?

Same. The start of Pokemon would be the only thing I'd add (I watched it on PBS before it was popular).

Hmmm...

  • Tamagochi (never had one but my friend let me keep hers one weekend )
  • Reviving the 60s/70s clothes and hair
  • Starter Jackets (I had a Charlotte Hornets one I think; it was purple and blue)
  • Nike Jackets (which you did not remove once inside)
  • Overalls
  • Platform shoes
  • Butterfly hair clips
  • Socks with Adidas or Nike sandals; even in winter. I remember one guy using his foot to move snow from the parking lot when we were parking early in the morning.
  • Plaid skirts (but not unless one of your friends was also wearing one that day; in a different color of course)

70's - Clogs, big ties, big lapels, Chopper cycles, space hoppers, clackers amongst others.

Clackers broke many a wrist.

I remember bell bottoms, tye dye, and those wooden sandles. Not the Japanese ones, they were American, but I can't remember the name.

Funny you should mention that. I have one of the original ones, called black cat or something like that. I have it in a cabinet and the other day I kept hearing something from the cabinet. I opened it up and Furby was talking. Seriously, not a joke. I had no idea the batteries were still good and it's been in there for years. It was hysterical. Onsa was hissing at the cabinet, Samai was trying to get in and kill it. I walked up to the cabinet and there was Furby, talking away. It's been quiet for the past week at least.

From the late ‘60s and early ‘70s: Nehru jackets, white go go boots (What were people thinking? Although I was angry at the time, thank goodness my parents wouldn’t buy them for me!), bell bottoms, mini skirts, tie dyed t-shirts, love beads, peace signs, military surplus clothing, troll dolls, etc.

I went to primary school in the mid 2000s (I guess I'm one of the younger ones here, haha), so these were the trends we had that I can remember:

- Tamagotchis
- Nintendo DS (Animal Crossing was one of the most popular games)
- Top Trump Cards
- Pokeballs
- Clark's "Daisy" Shoes (they had dolls inside the heel, so we used to trade and swap our dolls)
- Sticky toys (to stick on the wall)
- Barbie
- And when we were allowed to write with fountain pens in the upper half of primary school, we used to have Lamy pens as you could swap the lids and change colour. Stabilo handwriting pens were also very popular, as were Mapped rubbers/erasers.
- Skipping ropes (although at my primary school they were banned after a girl had an accident with one and had to be hospitalised)

I was at secondary school from 2011 - 2016; we didn't have any specific trends aside from Loom Bands which were popular when I was around 12.

You don't want to know. :flail: We did have Methuselah as a guest speaker when I was in Jr. High. Nice young man.

It wasn't a trend but it happened a lot and by today's standards it's crazy. But back then, it was nothing for kids to bring in things like new guns, pocket knives, etc., to show the class and the teachers.

As a tail end baby boomer, at least I got to experience Squirmles and Mood Rings and Shrinky Dinks pretty much before junior high school... those all gave way to full fledged Seattle Slew mania and Star Wars fandom by 1977-1978. My older sister called me a spaz a lot. I told her to buzz off. I had to wear big glasses till I finally got contacts by high school. That was far out! But what was with those shoulder pads? I kept cutting those out of my clothes. Hair was confusing. I went from a shag cut to french braiding my hair after letting it grow out, because I wanted to avoid this type of thing.
