Hi everyone,
I adopted a rescue cat about 7 months ago and have been attempting to train her to not jump on the counters in my apartment. She is a spayed female and is a little over 2 years old. For the first several months I had her, I lined both my kitchen and bathroom counter tops with foil that also had double sided sticky tape on it. This seemed to work well as she hated the feeling of the combination on her paws.
After maybe 4 months of having the foil on my counters, I slowly started to remove them (over the course of a couple of weeks). She seemed to keep off the counters for about three months, but then she randomly started back up again. I'm pretty sure she knows that she is not allowed on the counters because she only ever jumps up there when I'm sleeping or not home. I'm not 100% positive, but I think that she only jumps on my bathroom counters. I can always tell because I have a vase with dried flowers in it, and leaves always end up crumpled up on the floor.
She has several places throughout my apartment where she can climb and jump. I have two cat towers, one in the living room and one in my bedroom, and she is allowed to jump on my couches and my bed. So I don't think it's an issue of her not having enough places to climb. I wonder if the flowers alone are a reason why she jumps up there, but if I get rid of them, I'll stop knowing when she jumps up there. Although, ignorance may be a little bliss
I do play with her several times a day, in the morning, afternoon, and at night. Some days she is more active than others. Last night, she was very hyper, so I played with her more. Although now that she is over 2, she doesn't like to play hard for very long. Our play sessions usually only last 5-10 minutes before she loses interest.
Last night when this happened, I had a friend over, and we were in my room with the door closed (and the cat on the other side of the door). She was meowing a lot for attention, probably upset that we wouldn't let her into my room, but sometimes I just can't have her in there. When I came out of the room, that's when I saw the leaves on the floor. I put some foil down on the counters and went to bed only to awake to more leaves on the floor this morning. She is not allowed in my room while I'm sleeping at night.
So now I have fully lined counter tops with foil and double sided sticky tape. I suppose I could continue to keep this on my counters until the end of time, but it is pretty annoying having them on there all the time and doesn't seem like a great long-term solution.
Does anyone have any other suggestions for keeping your cats off the counters? I would greatly appreciate your suggestions!
