I wanted to know how others determined the "birthday" for their cat. Is it the day the kitty was adopted/taken in/bought? or the day your cat was born (if you know)

When i adopted my cat Charlie, he was already 3 months old. So i basically took the date that i adopted him, and went back 3 months, as he was already 3 months old, and that's how i got his birthday.

for Example: July 19th, 2013 (and i adopted him in October)

What do you do if you don't even know how old the cat is??

just curious, random thoughts...

I know the actual day that six of mine were born. But the other three I don't, so I do exactly the same as you and count back. :D

I know Mouse's birthday as the people I got him from let me know as soon as he arrived, then confirmed with me a couple of days later that I could adopt him if I wanted.  The two 'girls' I had before Mouse, I knew roughly when they were born as they were at a friend's parents home.  As I didn't know the exact day I decided they could share my mom's birthday because it was roughly the right date.

We adopted Abby on January 13th, so that is her special day. :)

When I adopted Oliver they told me he was about 6 months old. So I counted back to May. Since my kids' birthdays are 2/1 and 3/2 (Month - 1 = day), I set his birthday, for the purposes of celebration, at 5/4.

The shelter had Mogli down as being born in June. When I went to update his microchip info, his D.O.B. was June 1, 2012, and the vet had the same date in his file. It may or may not be correct, because he's also listed as a European Short Hair rather than a DSH. I think June 1 was probably arbitrarily chosen because the exact date was unknown.

Cowboy, the last one is the only one who was bought. His birthday is January 20.
Peanut Butter was adopted from the humane society in Febuary 2011.
I have six cats from my sisters farm who are aray of ages. The oldest is twelve, eleven and ten. The youngest three are six years old.
Meuzette was found in a parking lot seventeen years ago. Who knows with her. She is kind and a mother to all who moved in here. She loves and faught with no one except with her daughter. Who I found with her. Her daughter (who was sickly) died two years ago. Breezy, my shoe shoe girl. Came up to me and started kneeding my work shoe and won me over.
Meuzette was more leary of me. She came over after I picked up and started talking to the young cat. We made a pack that day and we never faultered our friendship. Even though I had five cats at home at that time. I thought seven cats might be a hardship, they weren't. They were a heart fulfillment. All five are long gone now. I brought in others after that.
When my first cat died, his spirit came within me. With a swish and cool air. He loved me and never wanted to leave. I told him go, he will be a free and happy cat there.
That is the kind of friendship I have here. Even if I don't know their birthdate

Mooch and Noodles will celebrate their birthday on 2/25 and they will be 9 years old.

I don't know for sure that is when they were born; we just counted backward the number of weeks they were supposed to be when we adopted them.

awww happy birthday Aurora!!!!

she was beautiful. i hope she's having fun in kitty heaven

in my culture/religion, after someone passes away, we forget birthdays, but we do something every year on the day that person passed away as a way to remember them.

I adopted Zoey on 1/18/14, and she was estimated to be a year old. The vet thinks possibly less, maybe 10 mons or so, but I'm going to stick with celebrating her birthday on 1/18!

We know Casper's actual birthday, because we contacted his prior vet and got his medical records (5/3/01).\

Cocoa, well we're using her Gotcha Day that she came to live with us.  We know the date she was rescued, but the personal one is better for us even though it doesn't help with her age.  So, we celebrate on that date - 12/22.  We questimate she was born in 2009/20010.  Thereabouts.

Our older boy was a stray & when we asked the vet that neutered him to take a good look at his teeth to give us an approximate age.  It was 8mos old, so we back his up and gave him July 4th as a birthday.

When we adopted our new boy his paperwork indicated an approximate birthday of August 13th so we're going with that.

thank you every one for your replies! just a random thought, and so many amazing and informative responses :)

I love learning how other cat owners do certain things, and I always love to learn new things! I'm a first time cat owner myself.

So, now that every has shared how they go about determining their fur baby's birthdays....does anyone out there actually do anything when the big birthday is here???

do cats get birthdays? cakes? presents??

For all of our cats the shelter told us their birth date.  We generally celebrate their birthday and the day they were adopted. To celebrate we generally get them a new toy or toys if they are little things.  The toy also comes in a very big bag with several sheets of tissue paper.  Also because we recently adopted three cats when it was our first year with the first cat we adopted we adopted another cat and then after another year passed we adopted our third kitten on the first two cats birthdays (they were born about a year and a week apart).   So I guess you could say our family has a history of celebrating birthdays by getting more cats but we've decided three is our limit.
