It's so interesting to me because everyone I know here that's around my age can speak fluently English. It's taught in school and just a generally adopted language. My girlfriend and I speak English half the time and sometimes I even catch myself thinking and dreaming in English. I always forget it's not as normal for at least Americans to get taught different languages. I think French is taught in Canada more right?

Well I live in the USA and you're right,the teeny bit of a 2nd language taught in high school is hardly anything and you even get to choose ( French,Spanish,Italian) well,in my day anyway - unless you want to study further it's only like a year course --- I don't know anyone that even remembers what they learned as a freshman in high school!!!

Seems the rest of the world teaches English from a young age ,mandatory .....everyone I know can speak enough English to get by in a conversation even though it's not their first language- if my family did not speak Italian Idve learned nothing in school

Many parts of Canada is French Canadian and it is their first language - I do believe most Canadians learn French though it's a little different from French spoken in France- still they learn a lot more than Americans I think.... We have too many choices here and not mandated part of school curriculum imo

So interesting how the school system differs around the world. I'm glad I grew up in the Netherlands, I feel like I have had so many opportunities to study interesting things that aren't really taught in different countries. But to be fair I also had French and German in school and I barely remember anything.

I think it's because I changed my starter word to a word with 4 vowels. And I realised that the English language doesn't have as many R's and S' as the Dutch language

My 2nd "hole in one" word, RAISE, had both a R & S. As does my current starter.

I think French is taught in Canada more right?

Yes, French is started in elementary school here, but not sure if you have to take it straight through high school or not. There are also French Immersion schools, where all subjects are taught in French. I think that's the best chance of becoming bilingual.

When I was in school, we didn't start French till grade 7, and I dropped it after grade 10, as I just wasn't learning enough to keep at it.

Yes, you're right the French spoken in Quebec is different from that in France, yet it's the France French that the English schools teach. But even among French areas in Canada, they all have their own variations or regional slang.

I always get a kick out of it when people say to me " I do not speak English" ! But that would be a good sentence to learn for starters lol

One of the first things I learned in Spanish was "No hablo espanol" LOL. And "donde esta el bano?" Both came in handy when travelling.
I wish a language was required here in the schools. When living in Houston as a child we learned Spanish as part of the curriculum, this was in 3rd grade.
