Weakness Not Myasthenia Gravis--controlled, Not Explained

We have a beautiful 2 year old cat Fionn, who at one year of age started walking on his whole back leg (like a rabbit). This came and went a few times and the orthopedic specialist diagnosed knees that slipped out of joint and recommended surgery in the future. As we waited-Fionn started having other intermittent lameness, limping first with one leg than with the other. This went on for 10 months, giving meds for pain and inflammation, although never a clear sign he was in pain. Then he became unable to lift his head and staggered around--we sent videos to the orthopedic specialist who said it was looking like possible Myasthenia Gravis and we should see neurologist. Our vet tested for Myasthenia Gravis. We went on a short vacation (with cat sitter stopping in for Fionn and his sister Molly)--came back to Fionn very weak, signs he wasn't getting to litter box, not eating. Test results came back saying not Myasthenia Gravis. Called our vet and asked if she had any ideas to try as we waited for the neurology appointment--she had us come in and gave him a Vitamin B shot on the chance it might help. (Thiamine deficiency can cause weakness and neurological symptoms) Some improvement in 24 hours so continued shots for a week--in just two days looking best he had in a long time. Tried to stop and symptoms came back. Eventually was able to find a good Vitamin B capsule (Thorne), give half morning and half night. Eight months of no symptoms: no limping, good energy, running around, eating well!.

On the time or two I've tried to decrease his supplement to once a day I've seen signs of decreased appetite, more laying around and then a weird sitting posture of front legs on chair rung-which he only does when he is getting weak.

Fionn and his sister ate the same diet since we got them at 12 weeks of age-normal mainstream dry cat food. She has had no health issues at all. I think Fionn has some sort of difficulty metabolizing B vitamins--Thiamine and/or others. We don't have a diagnosis and I haven't been able to find anything on the internet that explains what's wrong with Fionn.

I know there is at least one person out there with a cat with similar issues (ordering same supplement form Amazon!). I'm interested to know if anyone else has a cat with similar problems. I would love to compare notes!

Hi. I am sorry no one has responded to your post yet, so I just wanted to acknowledge it and keep my fingers crossed that someone on this site will see it and offer some first hand advice. :crossfingers::crossfingers::crossfingers::crossfingers:

Is there a vet university that your vet might be willing to contact and consult with?

Did you ask your Vet to hazard a guess as to what the cause could BE, since your Fionn and Molly eat the same food and she doesn't have that issue? From what I have read about this problem (low Vit. B1 in cats), once the problem has been resolved, usually by Vit. B1 injections, it stays resolved, unless the food they are eating remains low in Vit. B1, but if that were the case, you'd think Molly would have issues too. So... could it be that Fionn has other issues as well? Does he have diarrhea or any digestive issues? Reason i ask is that it could be related to Malabsorbtion syndrome, but that usually is diagnosed in the first place because the cats have strange "output" and often lose weight because they can't correctly absorb nutrients.

Do you by chance feed raw? Sometimes tht can be the culprit, if you don't get the Vitamins just right, or if you feed too much raw fish.

And lastly, have you tried contacting the person on Amazon who also purchase the same product to discuss the issue. I think you can probably ask a question of other purchasers and sometimes they respond. (just in case no one here fits the bill ) In the meantime, I guess there's nothing wrong with continuing to supplement his diet with the extra Vit B, is there? Fionn may just have a little quirk in his system.

Oh, I DO have one more question. Low Potassium also acts similarly to how you described him. Did your Vet check for that too? Just curious. Could be he's low on both, but I'll bet they checked.

Hi and thanks for your thoughtful response!
You have mentioned many things we explored on our way through this experience. He and Molly both ate Purina 1 initially and now Science Diet. Everything I could find about low thiamine levels was related to raw or homemade diets--which doesn't apply to him. The Purina 1 was salmon based and I now avoid fish for the most part since I found some references to fish impeding thiamine metabolism. He has had no digestive issues at all. I'm not sure if potassium levels were checked but at this point I am convinced it's all about the B vitamins.

I couldn't find a good way to contact the person on Amazon but replied to their review and said I'd post on this site, in hopes they would see it and find me here! I will see if maybe I can post a question, as you suggested. Fionn has some lasting neurological signs--if I let him chase a toy in circles he gets nystagmus (side to side eye movement) but really overall is wonderful. As long as he gets his B vitamins twice a day he is happy and active. The only issue is it means I have to get a pet sitter twice a day when we travel.

I assume he has some weird genetic metabolic syndrome but I have only found the one person on Amazon who reports a similar experience- I would love to be able to compare notes and maybe get some vet interested, for the benefit of other cats in the future.

Thanks--Fionn is doing really well with the vitamin B supplementation but I would like to compare notes with anyone who has a similar kitty!

Glad Fionn is doing well. Hoping you're able to reach that person on Amazon via your comments to their comments. I know trying to contact Amazon is hard, but it's not impossible. I've needed to reach out to them a few times lately, and with difficulty, I finally was able to do it. If you go down to the very bottom of their webpage they have a "help" choice, once you click on that you have to answer some questions, but eventually you get a choice for "call me" or "chat". if you put your phone number in they will call you. Or you can chat with them if you select that option. It's time consuming to ever get far enough to reach those options, but you can get there in the end.

Hi there! How is Fionn? I am dealing with assumed acquired Myasthenia Gravis with my cat, however tests were negative for it. I am trying to find others who have a cat with the symptoms of it but may not have had a positive diagnosis.

The OP hasn't been back since July 2022 so I doubt you'll get a response. You may want to start a new topic if you are dealing with similar symptoms and providing as much information as possible.
