Yes, I did know that. Adams's last words were, "Jefferson still lives." In fact, he had died early in the day.
Adams was very proud of July 4 and forecast that the day would be celebrated with parades, speeches, and guns going off. He was so prescient.
Here's a bit of trivia no one would have any possibility of knowing. I was born on July 4 while Dad was in the Army. For birth announcements, he sent out a General Order saying that my birthday would ever after be celebrated with fireworks and parades. So far, everyone has cooperated. What's a birthday without fireworks?
