My friend found Edie at a horse show, being tossed around by horses since she was stuck to a hay stack... abandoned. My friend Fiona bottle fed her, took her to the vet and gave her to us at five weeks.
Around nine weeks, my mom accidentally hit her with the basement door. My father had passed six weeks prior and my mom was in a fog. She forgot that Edie thought she was mommy and followed her everywhere.
She survived but after her personality completely changed. She regularly slept around my neck but now I could barely touch her. Oddly, she never acted like that toward my mom with the exception of the occasional snap with hissing and scratching. She was angry at me and my friend for years. It took her four years to warm back up to me, never for my friend but still does the occasional snap and scratch.
With the exception of myself, my Ma, and my other cat... she is scared and dislikes everyone. She loses her mind when she even smells a man nearby. I can’t have children or other pets around her.
I’ve taken her to vets, behavioral specialists and no one has answers on how to make her more friendly. (She has to be medicated to take her to the vet.) Edie’s 8yrs old, 4lbs, has a bit of a lazy eye from the accident but otherwise completely healthy. Loves string and laser lights with a massive appetite for a grown cat that still looks like a kitten. They said based off tests it’s brain damage. Has anyone else been through something similar? What did you do?

Hi! My goodness, what a story!
As I was reading your post, it sounds to me as though either a calming product like Calm-o-mile (there are lots of products on the market I just happened to think of this one, it sounds so holostic. However, the other over the counter products are as well, for instance valerian is an ingredient, et al) ...could possibly help, or music.

You could try classical harp music. Nobody knows why but that particular instrument is quite effective in relaxing some cats. Or, there's an app called Relax My Cat.

... you know, she doesn't sound all that different from my Big Guy. He hates the carrier, the car, kids, dogs, other cats, most people, loud yard work and such from neighbors (LOL other than fireworks, --weirdo)...he's so deeply frightened when he's at the vet that he melts into them when they carry him. They love him of course, this means they can do anything with him, but...

I guess I'm just wondering out loud, even without the conk on the head with the door, some of her stress triggers might have evolved anyway. Of course there's no way to know. The main thing is that I think it's terrific that you-all are working with and continuing to love her!

Did the kitten have to go to the vet when hit with the door? Just wondering if you were assuming brain damage or the vet told you. Because I wouldn't assume brain damage from personality change of a 9 week kitten that just got a nasty whack. Its just as Furballsmom said -- this is all range of normal stuff. Granted, definitely skittish side of the range of normal, but still common stuff.
