Belle, why did you have to go?

I'm a horrible pet parent!

I just got another rat, to be a cagemate for my resident rat, Amy. Her name was Belle. She was a beautiful black rattie, with a white stomach. I loved her. I did everything right. I put her in quarintine, I kept the room the correct temputure, I handled her carefully(always washing hands first) gave her food the vet recommended, and always had water provided. I went downstairs to tend to her, and I found her laying in her bedding, DEAD!

I burst into tears. Its my first death, that wasn't of old age. It was frighting. She was so young. WHY DID THIS HAVE TO HAPPEN????

I'm a terrible mom!

Awww, I am so sorry about your baby.

Don't blame yourself though. Rats are very suseptable to disease, it just happens with the smaller critters and there's no way of knowing really, when their time is near.

No, you are NOT a terrible mom. I have raised rats myself, and normally they are very hardy creatures. Nutritionwise, they are quite compatible with humans, unfortunately the reason rats are used extensively in animal testing. They do get colds and respiratory disease, but survive in the harshest of environments. SO, I suspect that Belle probably had some congenital disorder, perhaps her heart gave out, or she had kidney problems. You made her last days as comfortable as possible and I am glad she knew what it is like to be loved, and part of a loving family. My condolences to Amy and you. Take Care, Susan

Jenny, for whatever reason it was Belle's time to go. She came to you for love, for someone to know at the Rainbow Bridge, and you HAVE to let that comfort you.
We will never know why God calls them back so soon, but remember that you had her for a reason, to give her love when she needed it most
