Our 2 1/2 yr old male, Forrest, has done this almost every single night for at least a few hours for more than a year, mostly right when everybody goes to bed. Is he "standing watch" protecting his family? We even use a night light there because we don't want to trip or step on him, fall down the stairs or hurt him!!! ;-) Whatever the reason may be, I find this behavior intriguing, because there are more comfortable places in the house to sleep!

A lot of dogs like to sleep there to keep watch; maybe you have a "guard cat". Is there a heat vent nearby that might be making the spot particularly attractive?

Thanks for the reply, Jcat. There aren't any warm air vents that blow air directly to that spot. However, we do have air vents in other areas of the house where he could lay if he wanted to feel the warm air directly.
