well, that may be the next thing I try. I wonder if she could grind the thin slices enough. She was able to crunch into the quail wing bones last time I gave it to her. But I had to take it away because, like I mentioned, she had the whole thing in her mouth and was tilting her head back. Still...
That’s a great idea! I will try that. I also have the frozen turkey and duck necks but since she has a hard time crushing quail bones I think they may be too hard for her. But I welcome any and all suggestions!
This is what I've been doing, just feeding large chunks of quail. She chews them for a minute or so before gulping so I guess it's better than nothing. I have also been adding chunks of pork to her food. I am hesitant to try smashing the wings or feet because I still feel like she would try to...
Ok so I tried feeding the wing and quarter together and she kicked her head back again and tried to swallow it. She couldn’t of course but now I’m still hesitant to feed it. She chews the wings but can’t chew them up, maybe because her jaw strength is t there yet. She’s also missing her back...
Thanks for responding! Yep, one of my cats loves the turkey gizzard and chews on it for 20 minutes! The other won't touch them BUT I have duck gizzards/feet on the way from raw feed Miami so fingers crossed!
Thanks for that. How big a slice across the bone do you think would work for a gulper? Needs to be big enough that she can’t swallow whole but not too big that she thinks it’s too much work. Am I on the right track? This is all new to me.
and I don’t quite understand the mallet smash. I tried...
Interesting. I’m looking to feed primarily for dental benefits. Do you give these slivers whole and do your cats have to chew on them a lot? I’m wondering if this could work with Stella being a gulper and all.
And yes, I don’t think freeze dried necks are a good option unless someone corrects...
Does anyone successfully give duck or turkey necks? I can’t feed chicken necks.
if so could you let me know:
1. where are you getting them?
2. How do you feed? Whole? Small pieces? How big?
thanks!
When she ripped the wing bone out of my hand she chomped on it all inside her mouth, I couldn’t see it, it looked like she was trying to swallow it, then she just dropped the whole thing and sat there and looked at it, at which point I picked it up and threw it out.
when Ifed her the leg it was...
My cat can't have chicken, what do you think about raw (not freeze dried) duck feet? would the hollow bones still be an issue?
And what would be a good freeze-dried product for cats, specifically for dental benefits?
I tried holding one end like you said, she ripped it our of my hand, she's quite strong! I even resorted to holding one end with a pair of pliers but she would dig into my hand with her claw while yanking with her jaws and even still managed to rip it out that way.
I got some freeze dried duck...
Thanks for all the replies, super helpful.
She can't have chicken because of allergies but I might try duck feet. I have continued giving her quail, but have been taking the bone out which isn't ideal since i'm looking for dental benefits.
Since she is a gulper I have been hesitant to give her...
I’m wondering if maybe a Cornish hen leg would be better. The whole reason I’m doing this is for the dental benefit. I gave her another quail leg today with bone removed and she really only chewed it a few times. I was hoping she would like turkey/chicken gizzards but she’s not interested.
