Dog avoiding kitten (like the plague!)

Success! We've continued to work on this slowly but surely and the trick that finally helped the dog break through was to entice him with his favorite thing in the world: having my husband play with the flirt pole with him. This dog would give up a steak and lobster dinner if he saw us...

    Table scraps / begging?

OK, so not only does it depend on how well my cat trains me, but it varies from cat to cat. I love sharing my food with my dogs and they know the routine and the drill, so I would be fine getting the new kitten into the same routine. But I fear that even though my dogs have finally learned...

Dog avoiding kitten (like the plague!)

Thanks again for the replies and suggestions. It is the actual cat he is terrified of..... once I lock her in her cat room and physically move him into the living area to prove that she's not there, he goes over to the empty dog crate and sniffs and steals stuff that's in there. And when...

    Table scraps / begging?

Good reminder - cats train us more than we can train them, so choose your battles and accept the things you cannot change. One of my dogs knows the sound of me scraping the bottom of my bowl and regardless of how quiet I try to be, he hears it. Gotta love these critters. :) Sue

    Table scraps / begging?

Thanks - I have been putting her in her room while we eat so she won't even get tempted, but if that's not always convenient or feasible I will try to be stern as I push her away. I'm so bad at being stern with animals! Sue

Dog avoiding kitten (like the plague!)

Thanks, everyone. It definitely is a strange situation and one I was not prepared for. I started the introductions (months ago) by letting the dogs sniff the cat through a carrier. Even then, he sniffed and walked away quickly. I kept the kitten in one room for the first 6 weeks here and...

Dog avoiding kitten (like the plague!)

I have two dogs, a very old 150 pound Saint Dane, and a 4 year old, 40 pound mutt. I was scared to death to introduce a kitten to the home because of the big dog, and over the course of 2.5 months I have acclimated them to each other so that I can finally let the cat free roam the house when I...

    Table scraps / begging?

Hi there. I've always been a dog person but since I've been working at the cat shelter for a year I became a failed foster to a sick kitten I nursed back to health. I know the rules and training involved regarding dogs and table scraps, but I don't know anything about that when it comes to...

    New here, new cat vocals

That's what I'm hoping for, and when I brought home a tiny puppy 3 years ago, the giant dog was so patient and gentle with him . . . it was a beautiful site. I'm probably worried too much, but the fact that he could hurt her in a second and I could lose her just terrifies me. But I think...

    New here, new cat vocals

Thank you for the ideas and support (and encouragement). I have read about trying to let her roam while the dog is on a leash, and I am willing to do that, BUT.... the cat is very interested in the dog and constantly wants to get to him. So even if the dog is at my feet on a short leash, my...

    New here, new cat vocals

Hah! I have so much cat furniture, toys, accessories, etc. for this one tiny cat that it seems sinful not to bring in another cat to enjoy all this stuff! I've been on Amazon daily, not to mention all the stuff I bring home from the shelter when we have excess. We just assembled her 6...

    New here, new cat vocals

Thanks again. I like that idea - I will continue to respond to her "cat calls" but I will not go overboard each time I go to her. I like the idea of just a quick chat, quick cuddle, and back to amusing yourself for a while. I'm not sure if she will ever have total free roam of the house in...

    New here, new cat vocals

Thank you for your reply! I believe I brought her into my home at the end of October (so I've had her two months now) and according to her weight, we estimated her to be about 6 weeks old. When I took her for a vet visit a week later he examined her mouth and teeth and determined that she...

    New here, new cat vocals

Hi there. You would think I would know these answers but I'm not too proud to admit that I need help and feedback. I am the supervisor at our local humane society and am often asked to foster the very sick kittens. Not surprisingly, I have recently become a failed foster so as much as I know...
