Last night was pretty overwhelming. I have a 2 year old black and white fluffy boy named Steppy. He had major hunger that I had to feed because he was trying to jump on things and look for food. So, he ate much more than what my veterinarian said he would. Well, last night I checked on him every hour and noticed he was warm to the touch. He wasn’t sleeping on any of his beds I set up for him prior to his procedure. I am trying to figure out 2 things. Why would he randomly get warm, approximately 6 hours after his procedure? How long should it take for him to pee/poo after his procedure? Thank you for any advice!

How is he acting? Is he eating and drinking and using the litterbox? He might just have felt warm because he was sleeping. Most males bounce back very quickly from a neuter so he should be acting fairly normal today. If he isn't, give the vet a call.

Okay, he just had his first big pee and he had to use his big boy litter box he shares with his older brother (instead of the pellet litter I put in his recovery area). Right when he came home from his procedure, he was starving. He has been eating well, but he hasn’t been drinking as much water as I had hoped. He is drinking water now, I think because he knows I’m telling on him. He has been a bit wobbly this morning, still. Yesterday he had trouble with his back legs, as they seemed to be affected by the anesthesia. I’ve checked his gums and paw pads and they seem to be the same color they were a couple of days ago. He’s still sleepy, but I may have jumped the gun in panic this morning when I noticed the litter box wasn’t used. I am mainly worried about his temperature fluctuations now. My vet didn’t give very specific post-op instructions, so I’m going off of what I saw with his older brother in 2011 when he was neutered. He had a very quick and easy recovery with no worrisome issues. Are there any other things I should watch for? Steppy and I say thank you for the response!

I was happy to see that he had pee'd and pooped. AND that he is eating and drinking (at least drinking some). Those are excellent signs. Hekitty was a bit wobbly for a full day and a half following her spay, and both are general anesthetic procedures. That isn't an unreasonable time. IF you are feeding canned food, he's getting most of the liquid that he needs from the food.

It may be that his temperature fluctuations have more to do with where and in what position he is sleeping than his actual medical temperature, and you are just hyper-aware of them right now. Let's just keep an eye on this for right now, and reassess things tomorrow. FIRST day after surgery is never, ever "normal."

Thank you so much for your response! For most of yesterday he was very calm and sleepy, so I took naps with him and cuddled him. He got to walk around the house and see his brother (who was very happy to see him), but Steppy wasn’t in his happy-go-lucky mood that Bugsie is used to. So, he slept in his cat carrier while I walked Bugsie through his recovery area. I have been extra cautious with Steppy because he is a bit older than any of my other cats have been when they got neutered. He’s also a lot more assertive and hyper. ♥ Today he has gone to the bathroom as normal and has a good appetite. I’ve checked the incision area and it looks healthy. I’m so relieved today because he’s acting more like himself. Thank you so much for the response!

GOOD HEAVENS, he IS stunning! I was so focused on his health that I just glanced at his photo. That's an elegant tuxedo! You can almost hear him saying, "The name's Bond. Steppy Bond!"

When Dexter (also a tuxedo baby!) was neutered, he was on a fast from midnight the night before. When I picked him up, the vet told me to give him 1/3 what I usually give him for supper. Oh man, his face went from pure excitement to sheer, sheer disappointment when I plopped down about 1oz of food for him after 16+ hours without a bite to eat! He swallowed it whole and SCREAMED at me until I broke down and gave him more.

So glad that Steppy is doing better. He sure is a handsome fellow!

Thank you so much. He is a very fancy boy. He takes so much pride in his appearance. His whole name is Pepe (Steppy) Le Pew when I first got him, he was a little runt and looked just like a skunk (where the Pepe Le Pew name came from). Then as he got older, he began stepping on his brother with his back paws and standing on everything he’s not allowed to in order to get attention. That’s where the nickname Steppy cane from. he’s so silly and amazing. Thank you so much for your reply. He doing MUCH better tonight. Back to being hyper and talking to me constantly.

The same exact thing happened with Steppy! ahhhh they are such lovely cats. Steppy is very talkative and happy-go-lucky all of the time. When he came home from the vet, he was so out of it and as soon as he saw his food bowl, I honestly thought he’d chew through the glass. so I opened his bowl and he was literally tossing 4-5 crunchies into his mouth at once. I got worried and took the bowl away and he began crying and climbing my pant leg. I too caved because I know all of the times I had surgery, I had to eat and I knew how he felt. I ended up giving him a puréed cat food that he loves, so that helped with the hungry and hydration. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has a kitty that was hungry after surgery! I was so worried he would have an upset belly from eating more than recommend, but he did just fine. Thank you so much for the reassurance and response!

They said "keep him still/contained for a few days so he doesn't reopen his glue." Yeah...he was off like a shot as soon as I opened his carrier. He never slowed down one bit or showed any signs of the anesthesia.

That is so crazy! Poor Steppy was very wobbly from the anesthesia, but he is definitely back to normal today. It’s day 4 now. He’s back to being rambunctious and sweet. Lol I was so scared he was going to reopen his incision and hurt himself. Thankfully, cats are tough!

When Hekitty was spayed, I panicked because she was so slow waking up that they kept her overnight. By the next day, she acted like nothing had happened to her, but BOY was that a rough night!
