Phoenix is a very good boy. However he uses his claws way to much. He kneeds with his claws and digs pretty deep and when scared his claws come out immediately and he scratches me. I’m not provoking him he’ll be contently laying on my lap and my husband will walk in the room, or he hears a noise from outside and the claws are immediately out. I don’t think he means to scratch it’s just his instinct. I have trimmed his claws. But I would also like to teach him that claws hurt. Any tips? He’s six months old, so I think if I can teach him this behavior isn’t okay he’s young enough to learn.

I would try gently picking up his paw and letting out an "EEEK" (or some other noise of your choice) each time to let him know it hurts. It doesn't have to be screamed at the top of your lungs for him to figure out what you are telling him after you've done it for a while. Then gently put his paw down.

You can also help to protect yourself by giving him a blanket or towel to knead on in the meantime.

When he accidentally scratches you, say "owwww" in a high pitched tone. That is how another cat would let him know he hurt them. And, if you can, keep his claws clipped, then the tips won't be so sharp.
