Hello all. I just adopted a kitten who seems to be quite fluffy, especially at the back. I wonder what is the usual length of a short-hair cat? Thanks.

Some of her hairs in the back are 2 inches long. Just wonder whether she is going to be a short-hair cat or a medium-hair one. She also has ear tufts that are 1 inch long. Her tail is not bushy though.

Hi!
I looked around a bit and found that according to one source, fur that is 2-6 inches long is considered Long Hair. That's quite a range, but in any case ear tufts and paw tufts can possibly indicate that a kitten will grow to be a Long Haired cat :)

Thanks for the helpful reply! I am not sure she has toe tufts; her back paws may have a little bit:)
So I guess she is not going to be long-haired, but may be medium haired?

OK - ENOUGH of all this TEXT.......where are the pics ?:flail:

(oh, and a very warm, if belated, welcome to the forum !)

'Officially', there are no "medium hair" length cats - sorry, it has to be either short or long. Once you show her pictures, one of our real experts, maybe lutece lutece can offer an informed opinion!

Thank you for all your replies. This is her. I think it is unlikely that she will become long-haired. Just wondering whether her hairs will be longer than a typical short-haired cat.

The kitty in the picture appears to me to be an absolutely gorgeous black and white domestic shorthair! Although if she is young, it is possible that she may surprise you and become longhaired. That can sometimes happen.

Cats are genetically either shorthaired or longhaired. Within each coat length category (shorthair or longhair), the coat can vary a LOT in length and plushness. So, there is not really any specific length for a shorthaired or longhaired cat. It depends.

For some examples, Siamese and Exotic Shorthairs are both shorthaired cats, but the Siamese coat is short and flat, while the Exotic Shorthair coat is relatively long and plush for a shorthaired cat. Balinese and Persians are both longhaired cats, but the Balinese coat is not very long or full, and the Persian coat is extremely long and full. Genetically however, the Balinese and Persian both share the same longhair gene.

As others have stated above, there is no genetic category for "medium hair," although it is a term that some people use for a longhaired cat that doesn't have an extremely long or full coat.
