I have a ragdoll that I think is pregnant for our first breeding, its only been a week though so it's too soon to tell. The breeder hasn't responded to me in a while, maybe I've asked too many questions or maybe she is having some problems, I'm not sure. So I thought I could ask some questions here. First, my preference would be to have all kittens spayed/neutered at 12 weeks before they left, but my vet charges $200 per kitten. Is that the normal price everyone else pays? Also, I see a lot of people don't spay or neuter, but will hold the registration papers until proof of spay or neuter. If I'm not giving breeding rights, then why go through the trouble of this? They can't register and breed the cat without the rights anyway. Thanks, just trying to figure out how to handle this part of it.

It's really preferable to have the spay/neuter done before placement. Why?
  • Most pet kitten buyers don't actually plan to breed their cat, but if they don't spay/neuter right away, the cat can get out of the house accidentally and find a mate.
  • Other people will decide to breed a cat on purpose even though they don't have breeding rights... they just sell the kittens without papers.
I pay $300-600 per kitten for a routine kitten spay/neuter, depending on which vet hospital I use. I would be very happy to have it done for only $200.

$200 is an excellent price! Does that include full bloodwork and pain meds too I hope? Especially as a breeder, I am sure you would want to be sure your kittens are as healthy as can be, aside from all the health testing you had to get done for the parents.

Also, contact the no kill shelters in your area - ours in mine with give a certificate to spay/neuter for $55/$35 - I just had kittens and plan on doing this before I adopt them out (I am not a pure blood line breeder - but we adopted a stray cat that was pregnant) - I also contacted another vet who stated that we we spay in bulk she would offer a discount, so I have options, but you have to ask! (yes $150-$200 is a basic rate).

People will still breed unregistered kittens, so many buyers don't have a clue and don't understand why papers are important or don't care if they are getting a deal. I assume most breeders add that into the selling price. $250-300 is average for a kitten spay around here, low cost clinics would be cheaper but usually don't include the pre-op bloodwork or monitoring that comes with higher priced surgery.

I paid 300 to have my male neutered and 537 to have the female spayed. The siamese was a rescue so already done when I got her. So 200 is very reasonable if it includes pre blood work, pain meds and post surgery over night stay Bengals don't always handle anesthesia well so another vet was on stand by in case of any problem. There was no problem but still had to pay extra to have him on stand by
