Could you please tell me if is it stressing for my cat to visit a beach resort for a couple of days?

It will require around 7 hours road trip and we are going to stay for 4 nights in a beach resort that allows pets. FYI, My cat is 1 year old and I never take her for walks outside the house.

She's 1 year old. Great time to try out things like this to see how she'll react. Younger cats can be more adaptable. Do you have time and money to take her for a shorter trip first to see how she'll do?

I'm actually also interested in responses here because I have a senior kitty who is getting harder to leave at home. I think I'll be taking weekend trips around the area with her this summer to see how she does.

Hi: I travelled with my kitty quite a bit for work. She was a young cat and never did like it very much. She was trained on a leash. Cats are much happier at home. When she arrived at the hotel/motel she would make a thorough investigation by nose of every animal who ever walked in the room. I would only do this if you had no other options.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a beach nearby that I can consider as a short trip. The nearest one is 4 hours away. The reason why I reconsidered taking her to the beach is that when I take her to the vet, she always shakes on our way as she is not used to the streets environment. I’m not sure if that is the reason but I know that she is not feeling comfortable with those surroundings. I think going to the beach is a good thing for her but I’m afraid that she might be very scared and I end up leaving her alone in the hotel room.

Thank you very much, this is very helpful. I guess I will ask my friends if someone can host her for me.

Are you taking the kitty to the beach? Yeah, that will be stressful. I thought you were going to leave her in the room. My Krista will not be hiking or river rafting with me on my travel adventures. But I will try to make her as comfortable as possible in the room until I get back.

I think that your cat would be happier and probably safer if you found a family member or friend or even a cat sitter to come in to your home once or twice a day to look in on her while you are gone. Cats don’t like new places, they don’t like road trips and the possibilities of a cat getting scared and running out of a car or hotel room are great. I think you would also have a more relaxed time if you didn’t need to worry about the cat.

My cat looooves car rides. the longest I’ve had him on the car was probably about 1.5 hours. He can use the litter box with no issue, and spends the rest of the time either in my lap sleeping or looking out the window. I intentionally trained him since 5mo to travel with me, short trips, long trips, friend’s houses, local parks... if I can bring him with me I will.

I think it all comes down to what your cat wants. Take her on the car and see how she reacts. If it doesn’t go well, I would look for a pet sitter. If she doesn’t like travel, she most likely won’t be happy at a beach resort, being in a foreign environment will probably do nothing but stress her out.

Also leash training is important when you take your cat out to a foreign place. I would get that down before anything else. When cats are stressed they won’t come when you call.
