Hello Everyone,

So my cat Charlie seems to be having some kind of urinary issue, where he's been urinating less and less? He doesn't seem to be straining or in pain or anything releasing urine but it has been little in comparison to what it was say a week ago and prior. Otherwise he seems to be acting normal. I did change the litter...but that I started about a month ago or so to a less dusty one (changed from scoop away to Arm & Hammer one). But even then, I believe he was still using the litter just fine. So I don't think it's litter...

He had this problem in the past mannny years ago (can't recall how long) he had a blockage but back then he couldn't almost pee at all and was in pain and was meowing. So he ended up getting surgery and everything turned out fine. I think he had UTI once before too and had history of having high PH and some cyrstals before. So he was basically given back then C/D food and was told to be on it for rest of life? And this was many years ago but obviously I didn't give him for that long.

But now the issue is that I'd want to give him his C/D food but he barely licks it. He doesn't like it at all and over past week I've tried all various kinds of C/D flavored cans the vet office had but nothing. So I wanted to know if this Purina Urinary Tract one could help him? Or other food that can help combat this urinary issue?

I'm sure a trip to vet is looking likely, but I know as far as his C/D food (which I know will be the end result) I just would like to know other possible foods that can be substitute to this C/D food before the vet say basically that is THE only food for him to eat.

I'd appreciate it.

Hello,
if he is not straining and he is urinating a decent amount (I mean, not coin-sized pees and at least once a day), I would believe he is simply drinking less or introducing less fluids with his food. UTIs usually manifest themselves with other symptoms. Anyway, it's easy and fast (and cheap, at least here) to do an urine test, so I would do it anyway, to ease my mind.

Hello there,

Well actually it is almost coin sized, possibly slightly larger almost a little under palm size but maybe 2-3 times a day. He used to just urinate twice...at most but definitely have more urine produced. So thats why now I notice it being far less as its the spread on litter is not as large as before.

He does drink water every day, not large amount but not too little either. Same amount he always does. But yes a trip to the vet for urine testing should help i agree

Hi. Feeby typically only starts showing 'characteristic' signs of a UTI when it starts to get bad - meaning she has it a while before I suspect there is something wrong. Even then she doesn't 'show' signs of pain.

Given Charlie's history, I think it would be wise to have his urine analyzed and cultured (the culture part will show the specific strain of bacteria and enable a more effective antibiotic to be used). Urinary tract infections in male cats can be much more serious than in females - and not something you should delay acting upon.

Feeby had bladder surgery for her stones 10 years ago. Since then she has been on both Hill's C/D and Royal Canin SO (both wet and dry). Knock-on-wood, she has been stone free since then. I have only seen two flavors for Hill's (chicken and ocean fish) and one for RC (chicken), so if you have more flavors where ever you are located, you are lucky to have been able to try different ones - even if Charlie, unfortunately, doesn't like any of them.

I have never used the Purina Pro urinary care (both wet and dry), but have heard it can also be effective. There is also a urinary care food called Wysong Uretic, but I believe it is offered only in dry form.

I would still try to increase Charlie's water intake as well - perhaps with a fountain? Lots of cats are intrigued to drink more with 'moving' water.
