my oldest cat was diagnosed with early stages of kidney failure. it’s very early, no symptoms other than frequent urination. but she has diarrhe. i’ve tested her three times for parasites, including pcr. negative. she’s done bloodwork and everything was fine (other than kidney). they’ve prescribed flagyl twice, which helps. until she stops taking it. i don’t know if she’s suddenly developed an allergy or what to think.

Welcome to the site, I'm sure you will find lots of useful and interesting things to read. And photos, we love photos here. I'm sorry your cat has diarrhoea, you could try adding cooked pumpkin to his food, about a teaspoon daily. It must be unsweetened and no additives. You could also try psyllium powder, a pinch on his food twice daily. Both are known to work well. Let us know how you get on.

Did you look for potential sources of intoxication around the house?
What do you mean by "diarrhea"? How fluid, how many times a day? Did this happen before? How are you sure it is diarrhea and not vomiting or regurgitation?

Sorry for being so "policeman", but sometimes this is an efficient way to spot the cause. Not necessarily being the one people imagine at the in the first place.

i brought her to the vet and did any ultrasound. it showed symptoms of irritable bowel disease. they started her on steroid treatment.

Irritable bowel disease is something we all have in a certain degree :-).

Simple things first - environment. Then diet. Then medication.

I am not questioning the vet's decision. I am just saying that a thorough check around and a fresh look to the diet may offer some additional info.

This seems tricky. You are probably going to have to do some serious detective work/ diet changes to figure out what is upseting your poor cat's tummy.

Years ago when I was fostering a couple of kittens they had the runs so bad they were bleeding. She recommended baby rice cereal ... it works to stop then up. You can add it to her wet food. They still had the runs and she recommended kaopectate (sp) but one I can't remember the dose for little kittens, let alone your cat's weight. Plus I have no idea how that would harm/help your cat's kidneys. The rice cereal seems like it would Be more benign. I think your vet or another vet can better help you navigate this food mine field.

I hope your kitty feels better soon!

...we came to that conclusion after eliminating everything else. i’m not trying to be rude but my vet actually knows my cat.
