I noticed my cat Felix (I have a picture of him as a kitten as my avatar) has some black stuff on his paws that looks like it could be either ordinary dirt, or possibly flea dirt. Would flea dirt normally show up this way? Or could that be a sign of a different problem?

its prob just dirt, you can check for fleas using a fine tooth comb through his fur and wiping it on a white cloth or paper towel (shows up on white the best) if theres any dark red to black spots its a sign of fleas- there are test kits that you can purchase but if you look it up you prob have similar items to substitute to check

Hi. Felix is a cutey!! It's probably just dirt, try cleaning his paws off with a hypoallergenic wipes or a warm, wet wash cloth just to see if it will completely come off. If it does, as HPeters HPeters suggested check elsewhere on his body for fleas with a comb.

If the paws don't come clean, it could be staining from something he got into, especially if he is allowed outdoors. Check both inside and out for something that could have caused it. And, you could use a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water to see if that would help take the stain away - of course, rinse thoroughly afterward.

Use a damp, white paper towel to clean the spots. If they are flea dirt, they will turn red.
