Peridot, the stray I took in a little over a month back, keeps getting a black discharge from both of his eyes. I have to wipe it off about once a day. Google tells me that black discharge can be normal, but what do you think?

Edit: Actually, the more I look at it, the skin around his right eye is definitely red. Discharge comes out of both eyes, but his right is worse. Is there something I can grab at the pet store or is it a vet question?

Checking again to see if anyone has any thoughts on this.

I don't know...don't think I've ever encountered anything like that, but then again, I've got BLACK cats!

I'd rather be safe than sorry, BUT, what about emailing these pix to your Vet and asking? Might be the easiest thing just in case it's nothing.

My cat has feline herpes and he gets black/brown discharge in the corners of his eyes, but I've never seen it all the way around the eyes like that. My cat takes Lysine for his eye herpes. If it's bacterial, then he'll probably need antibiotics.

Oh! Didn't even think of emailing the vet. I'll try to get better shots tomorrow and attempt to send an email. Thanks!

You can always try some Lysine to see if that helps clear up the problem with his eyes.

I know it’s not what your dealing with but From time to time my cat gets black stuff from his nose. If it gets worse before some medication then the stuff comes from his eyes. It normally means he needs antibiotics. Thankfully I’m getting good at seeing the early signs. Meanwhile he gets the lysine treats daily which help.

Hi there, I know this is an old post but I have an orange tabby too who gets these eye boogers! May I ask how this turned out—and if your vet had any helpful information? Like many others, I’ve taken him to the vet and asked about this in the past but didn’t get much more than “seems fine” response. Thank you for any insight! Hope your kitty’s doing well :)

Oddly enough for my little kitty it seems to be linked to allergies. We tried 2 different allergy pills and so far the one is working ok. When allergies are really high for a long time it starts to come back, I just got a program to help keep better track of which one might be causing it but haha have to wait again for allergy season. I still have yet to talk to the vet again with all the new information I have but I want alittle more to see what we can do from there.
Keep in touch and let me know how your Journey goes!

Wow, it's been about a year and a half, but I have an update on this!

Life happened so I never got around to talking to the vet about Peridot's eyes when this originally happened before it went away on its own. However, it came back about a week ago, exact same problem, so I just took him in today.

Conjunctivitis! They gave me some eye drops for him so hopefully that will clear it up in a week or so.

I have a cat with one eye, and feline herpes. His no-eye gets a build up of mucus that gets black and crusty. His good eye gets a little black crusty in the corner. At this point I've accepted it as normal for him, but I keep an eye out if it increases or gets inflamed. Vet usually prescribed antibiotics for flare ups.
