My 10 year old cat needs to put on 2 pound my vet said. The only suggestion she made was baby food and all the treats she wants. I turn here for any advice I can get. She only eats dry food other than chicken when I make it. She really likes nine lives dry food but as you know it's offers little nutrition. Please help. I really don't know what to do. I don't think I like this vet either.!?

Hi! Try any and all of these things;
Try making this;
tent test for dehydration and home-made pedialyte recipe - The Daily Kitten

Also, try making one of these;
Kitten Glop Recipes - Supplementing Cats and Kittens with nutritious formula you make at home: presented by Bengal Cat breeder Foothill Felines. --This website has a number of kitten glop recipes, with ingredients that you may very well have in your house.

These can be used on their own or combined with food. Also, if you heat the food a little - stir it so there aren't any hot spots from the microwave. Or you could heat some water, about a tablespoon, and add that to canned food. A small glass works to stir it all up.
  • Chicken, beef or ham flavored baby food such as Gerber Stage 2 - make sure there is no garlic or onions in the ingredients
  • Tuna and/or the juice, a low mercury/low/no sodium brand is called SafeCatch
  • Salmon, mackerel
  • Sardines (make sure there are no bones)
  • boiled cut up chicken or turkey with no seasonings
  • canned kitten food any brand - it's usually smelly. See if it's eaten on its own, then maybe mix it in or put on top
  • Try mixing in Kitten Milk Replacer - there are recipes on the internet or store bought
  • Fish, tuna or BBQ flavored canned wet food (I personally have never seen BBQ flavors, but...)
  • Lickable cat treats or pouch treat 'gravy' poured over the food
  • kitten glop (recipes in website link above)
  • Bonito flakes
  • fortiflora
  • fish oil
  • green beans, asparagus mushed up
  • goat milk, or no lactose cow milk
  • whole cooked eggs (the white must always be cooked) or raw egg yolk now and then
  • broth with no salt and no garlic or onion or seasonings of any kind
  • There are also commercial toppers, Applaws is a brand that can work well as a topper
  • Some good treats would be freeze dried Purebites, Orijen, Meowtinis, Meowables
  • There are also Lickimats that you could spread types of soft food onto, even plain unflavored yogurt, and even freeze it. Licking something can help a cat to feel better emotionally The LickiMat - Food Puzzles for Cats
  • shredded cheddar cheese

If you don't like the vet or the advice you were given, seek out another vet. Was bloodwork done? If not, make sure the new vet does do bloodwork. Senior cats often develop health issues that cause weight loss or the inability to maintain weight.

Can you try a different brand of dry food that's better quality than 9 Lives? Will your cat eat canned food? There are some brands of foods that look good enough for a person to eat such as Weruva. If your cat likes cooked chicken, Weruva's Paw Lickin Chicken variety is shreds of chicken in gravy. Soulistic is made by the same company and costs slightly less. Good Karma is the equivalent of Paw Lickin Chicken. Both brands can be found at Petco.

I agree a better dry might help. Maybe try some small bags of Purina, it might be a bit better? Maybe some of the Purina beyond flavors might appeal to her? Or even something like Merrick kitten, the dry? Many kitten foods are higher in protein, and calories. and include wet if she will eat it. Many cats like fancy feast, and its available everywhere.

Soulistic that LTS3 mentioned is good, they have some shredded chicken foods your might like, such as the aromatic chicken in gelee, or the good karma chicken in gravy, they have a lot of flavors to try if you have a petco nearby? Weruva paw lickin chicken is good, as is Fussie cats chicken in gravy. you want some high protein foods for her, as you want her to gain muscle, not fat weight.

Below are some links i like to look at foods.

When my older cat started to lose weight, I started him on Kitten Chow. Kitten food is higher in calories and nutrition. If he refuses wet kitten food, there are many brands of good dry. The trick is to just get them to eat. Older cats need a normal weight because if they develop something that causes them to stop eating, they have little reserves to fall back on. Offer treats too, often, but watch for loose stools, sometimes teh treats can be a little 'rich'. All the luck!
