Hello Hello! Happy Tuesday!

What was the first thing you did that truly made you feel that you were a real adult?

For example....booking your own appointments for the first time, moving out to your first apartment, getting your driver's license, bills, marriage/kids, managing a huge medical crisis in the family etc even something as simple as let's say, picking up a new hobby.

As for myself, there have been many little instances along the way - but probably the big (And pretty typical) one is getting a "real" long term career after graduating University. I have been working since 16 years old of course, 12 if you count babysitting and dog walking, but all those jobs prior were either summer or contract only jobs, thus intended and expected to be temporary. So having a job that is intended to be long term was quite something! My current position is my longest running, at three years now - sounds like utter peanuts to many but it is a subtle holy smokes to little ol' me

Other ones would probably be when my grandpapa passed away when I was 19, travelling solo for the first time, being the rock to my parents when my father was going through a lot of serious medical problems and overall complete and utter financial flexibility, responsibility and independence.

And honour of my friend, whom said getting a new vacuum cleaner for the first time and being utterly excited about it

I bought furniture for my living room. Specifically a couch. I picked it out on my own and used my income tax to pay for it, had it delivered. And I wanted the chair that went with the set and I found someone selling it on craigslist and I bought it too for way less. It's my favorite chair. But now I'm moving and I don't think it will fit in my new apartment. I'm not even sure if my couch will fit. But that really made me feel like an adult for some reason. Not my first job or moving out or anything, but when I bought my couch. Maybe because it was completely my decision and I didn't ask for any opinions from my family. I did it all on my own. I didn't wait to hear their opinion and get the okay from my mom. I just decided I needed a new couch and that was how I was going to spend my own money .

I still don't feel like an adult, and I'm almost 40 :sigh:. Whenever I do adult things like buying a house or a car or having the AC repaired, I feel like I'm faking it. I don't know what would change that.

I feel like that might be unique to those born after the '60s. I don't think my parents thought about what made them an adult, at all.

I'm 18 now, so am a very "new adult", but one of the first things was voting in local elections, followed by getting my provisional driver's license.

I’ll second what aliceneko aliceneko says: voting in my first presidential election (back in the mists of time during the Vietnam war) and getting my driver’s license.

Any time someone talks about being an adult, i.e. “responsible,” I always think about this sign that was on the wall in the break room at work. :)

At 18 I was working 8 hours a day and going to school full time. My days were 5am to 2pm work, drive to college, nap, classes 4pm to 10pm, home by 11pm. Weekends were nothing but writing papers and studying. I made it through with only one C and three B's; everything else As.

But I think the point where I felt like an adult was taking care of my niece. My brother and his ex haven't been the best parents so I've had a lot of buying her school clothes, planning her summer vacation and scheduling for her pick up and care.

Probably going out and getting my first cell phone. It was prepaid; but I was just starting to have my own bills. So it was only things like my phone and my portion of the car insurance; but still I decided on my own and didn't consult anyone.

I got married just a few years after that; but I don't think I really felt like an adult till I had a house and kids. Now I feel a bit like a cranky old lady who does what she wants and doesn't have to explain herself to anyone. :D An old friend of mine is going through a separation/divorce and wants to hash and rehash every detail of her marriage like we did her high school boyfriends and I'm reallllly struggling to be patient. :ohwell:

First drive without an adult passenger.
That was really a cool and kind of scary feeling!

Even though I am in my late 30's I don't always feel like an adult.. lol! Although, I am always taking care of my pets and I do cook sometimes. I think something that might sound mild to some though was when years ago I stayed in a motel for days with the person that I was dating.

I felt very grown up when I got my driver's license but I was still living with my parents. I truly felt like a grown up when I got my first apartment and had bills to pay and furniture to buy! Also no one telling me what to do!

I think it was when I went to the doctor for the first time after moving away from home and where the form asks for the name of the responsible party for the bill I had to list myself!:thud:

And, when I got invited to a party and didn't have to say I need to ask my mom first.
