Just over a year ago I lost my 8 month old kitten to FIP. I also have a 17 year old cat, and I worried about her constantly for several months afterwards. She doesn't seem to have caught it, but I remain vigilant.
Hope Vicki is doing better by now.
I have a tortie, too (though she has all 4 legs) who is 16 & diagnosed as hyperthyroid about 2 months ago. She was eating at least twice as much as usual, but actually losing weight. She had also become more vocal, constantly meowing.
She's on methimazone...
You suggested testing for FIP. I had a kitten who died from FIP a few months ago, and the vet and just about everything I've read said that there is no reliable test for FIP. There is a test that will show if the cat has been exposed to the virus, but it's not very helpful because something...
Thank you for all of the kind words.
I took Lucky to the vet as suggested. She checked out fine, so the vet asked me a lot of questions about other changes in the house that might be upsetting her and causing her to go outside of the litterbox. I mentioned that after Smokey left us I cleaned...
Honey passed away from renal failure at the age of 16 in September, 2002, leaving her 15 year old "stepsister" Lucky all alone.
About a month later I decided to adopt a kitten from a shelter to keep Lucky company. I picked out the cutest little 3 month old gray kitten, and named him "Smokey"...
I am so sorry to read about Rufus. My 16 year old cat died of renal failure in September, and my remaining cat (Lucky), who is 15, seemed so lonely. I adopted a kitten from the same shelter where Lukcy came from. He had his pre-operative blood tests before his scheduled neutering, and the...
Thank you ddestes & Misha for your replies. I don't feel quite as hopeless as I did at first.
My kitten (Smokey) seems perfectly healthy. He eats like a horse, is active and alert, isn't too thin or too heavy, has clear, bright eyes, and has doubled his size in the 3 months I've had him! I'm...
You said that you have experience with FIP. I would be interested in learning more.
Last week I took my 6 month old kitten to the vet to be neutered. They did the pre-op blood tests and they came back showing that he had anemia and high levels of protein, so they wouldn't do the surgery...
I also was told by my vet that FIP is easily spread because the virus can live outside of the cat for several weeks. This means that other cats can become infected from litter boxes, food & water dishes, carpeting, clothing, etc. She suspects that my 6 month old kitten is in the early stages...
