Can cat be allergic to novel protein?

@Carolina - Thanks for the additional ideas. He is SO much better today. It's pretty amazing. I'm definitely inclined to think it was the steroid that caused the rash because it seems like we're seeing rapid improvement since we took him off it last week.  We have about 4 more weeks of the food...

Can cat be allergic to novel protein?

Hi again! Thanks SO much to everyone for their input! The other day, I actually googled to see if we had a veterinary acupuncturist nearby so I'll check out the holistic vet link, for sure. And great info about the possibility of being allergic to something else in the food. They did a skin...

Can cat be allergic to novel protein?

Okay, VERY long story short: Our cat Smudge (the kitty in my avatar) had out-of-control chin acne. Chin became infected and lymph nodes swelled up. After trying several things, we went to a veterinary dermatologist. In conjunction with a low-dose steroid and antibiotic, she wanted to do a food...

So frustrated. Started as acne, now skin infection?

Thanks, everyone! Lots of good info and ideas here. Luckily, our vet is really great about being open to our ideas and working collaboratively; so if the antibiotics don't take care of it, I'm sure he'll be easy to approach when discussing next steps. White Shadow - That's awesome info! I'll...

So frustrated. Started as acne, now skin infection?

Well, it was pretty straightforward at first with the black, dirty-looking comedones. His chin was a bit swollen but not too bad. But once we started treating it, his chin and lymph nodes swelled up. We discontinued the benzoyl peroxide because our vet was worried it was irritating Smudge's...

So frustrated. Started as acne, now skin infection?

Thank you! We're in the process of trying to transition him over to wet but it's slow-going. He likes it but hasn't quite gotten the hang of exactly HOW to eat it yet. (Does that make sense?) Raw is probably far down the road. Can you explain what you mean by "novel protein"?

So frustrated. Started as acne, now skin infection?

I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with this kind of problem. This is Smudge: When we adopted him in April, he had acne. We washed his chin with benzoyl peroxide and put muciprocin on it (per our vet). The comedones are pretty much gone but his chin is still swollen, he's lost...

    Smudge and Abby

Thought I'd post a few of my two here. Smudge is the tuxie and Abby is the tabby. I seem to have a lot more of Smudge even though he's only been here a couple of months. I swear that cat poses for me. Abby, on the other hand, is all "Yeesh! It's the paparazzi again! I'm outta here."
