The company has new varieties under the name Weruva WX that have even lower phosphorus.

As I understand it, these won't require a veterinarian's approval to purchase. They will be available at Chewy in the US, and Amazon and Petflow.

Other than the low phos, the nutritional content otherwise is the same as their non- WX foods, including protein.

Also for those who need to know, the iodine content in the Weruva and Weruva WX varieties and in their Petco brand Soulistic formulas is O.6 mg/kg.

The company rep said they knew the chicken fat would be a concern for people trying to avoid chicken.

" This food is not complete and balanced and should not be fed as the only meal to cats on an everyday basis. "
They have to put that note on due to the phosphorus being lower than aafco regulations. All the rest of the nutrition is complete :) this was the only way they could produce this food and get it on the market.

Does that apply to the prescription foods too - or are they high enough in phosphorus to meet aafco requirements?

The WX formulas you mean? I'm double-checking with the company rep I spoke with that I heard him correctly, but I believe he said that the WX varieties will not require a vet prescription.

The WX formulas are too low in phos to meet aafco requirements.

No, I meant the 'regular' prescription foods that have been on the market for a long time now. I don't recall seeing such a disclaimer on them. If they aren't required to have such a disclaimer, then I am guessing their phosphorus is higher than the Weruva WX - or they have some sort of an exemption given they are prescription. Just curious and thought you might have known!

I apologize I didn't know what you meant at first :), but yes.

For a couple of examples, --not good from RC;
Royal Canin's Urinary SO dry cat food is 1.26% as fed basis. They don't list phos for their scrip-required canned foods. I did my absolute darndest to get Royal Canin to tell me something, anything, about the phos as well as the iodine but got nowhere.

Hills c/d multicare chicken wet food has 0.74 % phosphorus (dry matter).
In their canned y/d for Hyper-T kitties, their phos is 0.52% dry matter but their iodine is 0.1 ppm (as a side note, felinecrf is more or less ok with this food for kidney kitties. AAFCO regs are 0.5 for phos so that's about as good as it gets for most cat foods, and this isn't a bad level of phos for cats that are in a stage of the disease that can tolerate it).

In any case, I'm like you in that they've managed to obtain an exemption somehow since AAFCO guidelines are iodine at 0.6 % dry matter.

I was curious after FeebysOwner FeebysOwner 's owner's question about prescription foods and so checked Hill's k/d early support chicken/vegetable stew. The Hill's site says here that the food is "complete and balanced" per AAFCO. The dry matter phosphorus is .59%.
I thought phosphorus is in meat so I'm curious how much protein it has
The "No Protein Sacrifice" section on the page that Furballsmom Furballsmom linked to kind of addresses that question. :) One of the best things about these foods is that they're very low in carbs. I could imagine feeding, say, a can of one of these Weruva foods each day to help balance out a can of something a cat loves that's relatively high in phosphorus.

I wish they had this food in a novel protein for cats who have sensitivities / allergies to chicken. The tilapia and tuna variety contains chicken fat and we know eating too much seafood isn't good:bat:

I have ordered a 12 pack of the chicken and tilapia in gravy. Fingers crossed. I went for the gravy style since Twyla has turned her nose up at Weruva puréed food before (Press your Lunch).
