Do you have a set of "good" dishes?

My mother and both brothers worked in a grocery store when I was a kid and they had one of those deals where you could get dishes with your cash register receipts. I have full service for at least ten people of those with all of the serving platters, etc. I only really use those dishes on Thanksgiving if I have the whole family over. I'm cleaning out my mother's house and oh my, the dishes. I've already donated her every day dishes, but there are three more full sets! There is the set she got when she was married in 1953 and there are two more sets from the grocery store, never used and still in their boxes!

It seems like good dishes are not as much of a thing now like it was when I got married. Do you have some?

My “good” dishes are just an extra set of Correlle that I keep for large gatherings. But I have a set of vintage dishes my mother gave me that were her “good” dishes and never used. My mother had a cedar chest full of wedding gifts that were also never used.

Nope. I do have a set of four goblets I got from the parent of a student once. I drink wine in them to feel fancy, but otherwise our dishes are just our dishes.

I have my great-grandmother's set of blue-something dishes. Packed away in boxes. I don't get them out because I wouldn't dare use them. They're ancient at this point. And....cats in the house. I've been told they're worth a small fortune, but how would I know? And I'd never sell them anyway.

For everyday during the spring and summer, I use Fiesta. Come November, I get the Winterberry out for over the holidays and up until February. Then the Fiesta comes back out again.

I have a set of bone china that was a gift from my siblings at my 1st marriage which now is decades behind me. Oscar de la Renta by Mikasa. I love the these dishes. Plain white, with narrow gold and platinum banding. Quite elegant and timeless and I do use it now and then, even if just cooking a fancy at-home dinner for my husband and I. I am always on the look out for pieces I may not have in my set but they must have made this in a very short timeframe because I've never seen it for sale anywhere.

My husband inherited 2 rather generic looking sets from his parents. One is red glass, don't remember the name off-hand. Can't even remember what the other set looks like. I don't like either of them and I know they are not even interesting enough to be higly valuable vintage dishes (maybe I'm wrong though, I've never checked). We've never even opened the packing box they came to our house in and I finally relegated them to the basement. I hope to find new owners of those sets before we move from this house (or sooner). I can't imagine ever wanting to use a full set of red dishes.

Like Winchester Winchester my every day dishes are Fiestaware which I started buying in the very early 80's. A couple of vintage pieces too. I also have another retro colorful dish set made by Riviera that I like but it's put away since no need to use it.

So the answer is yes and way too many.

When I was living with my dad, I had a a 'good' set of dishes.. They were the ones you had described, from the grocery store. I did have them when I lived at my own apartment. When I moved in with my dad, we had a set of Corelle.

Now, since I am limited on storage space; I have the Corelle. Easy to replace.

No. I barely have "bad" dishes, lol. I'm trying to minimize. If someone comes over (ha) we'll use paper plates or get takeout.

After my grandma died my mom was trying to find someone who wanted her good china and couldn't find ANY takers. She put it up for free on Facebook, tried to sell it (very cheap) at several yard sales, nope. She finally said forget it and dropped it at Goodwill, whatever they did with it, not her problem any more. There aren't a lot of people who have the patience and space for dishes they don't use often.

I have a bunch of mix-and-match and hand-me-down stuff. Guests can starve if they don't like mismatched dishes. I'll go buy stuff at the hardware store if I break all I have of one item.

When we got married I only registered for every day dishes which I still have and love them. When my in-laws moved and downsized they gave us a set of their fine china dishes. I've probably used them only two or three times but can't part with them. The one disadvantage is that I can't put them in the dishwasher. ☹

I don't but my parents have at least 4 full sets of good dishes and silverware. The blue and white china with the stagecoach and Victorian-era scene was used only for holidays when I was growing up. That hasn't been used in at least 2 decades now since my parents no longer host dinner parties for relatives. The plain-ish white china set was never used but I think the dainty tea cups were used a few times for guests. The two sets of vintage red Chinese porcelain dishes in the freestanding china cabinet have always been there as display. They've never been used.

At one time, I did have china, but it just didn't get used enough to bother bringing when I moved. Now I use Fiestaware for every day ... and I consider it nice enough to use for special occasions.

I’ve recently inherited a set of Wedgewood “Charnwood,” which always seems too good for me, so, it stays in the cupboard & Zorro gets 1 plate: its flatness is easier on his last fang. I use a bowl. (…waitaminute, what’s wrong with this picture?).

I think my Grandma’s good dishes came from one of those grocery store programs. I wish I had a teacup and saucer or something from her set. I don’t know who took it when they cleaned out the house a few years ago. I keep my eye out for them at antique stores.

If it was her other set; then I have the salt & pepper shakers. A friend of mine collects that pattern too.

I do have good dishes already though. I dreamt of an elegant dining room and registered for china with cobalt blue rims. We got a few pieces for our wedding and bought most of the rest ourselves. When I got notice it was retiring my aunt and grandma got us a few pieces for our combined birthday and Christmas that year. Its in my china cabinet on display; but I still get nervous about using it with kids around. Not Monica on Friends bad; but st;)

I had a set of Haviland Blue Garland china before I moved to Arizona. I had to leave it behind since I was going across the country from east to west coast. To my happy surprise I found a few pieces in thrift shops and kept buying them until I had a set. Sometime around the beginning of covid I decided that pretty things are meant to be enjoyed not just with company. We are special, we are the one who should be using and enjoying our beautiful things. Not saving them to be given away to family or strangers. I'm using my ' good ' dishes every day!

My mother had a set of the old Fiesta, including the nesting bowls. She sold them at a yard sale. I had offered to buy them from her, but she wouldn't let me have them. I was sick about it and still am when I think about those dishes. I have a couple pieces of old Fiesta, but most of my dishes are the newer ones. I started out with all Periwinkle Blue (which is now discontinued, I think), but then went to the various other colors.

I'd love to find a set of the old Fiesta nesting bowls, but I couldn't afford them. I saw them on eBay several years ago for a private auction. I did see them a couple days ago. For the six nesting bowls, they wanted $1,200+. I can't afford that. Somebody else had them for "only" $850. Can't afford that either.

If this ever comes back into stock, I want several. In red and green because they would go with my Winterberry.

No, we only have plain white Correlle. My mother had a service- for 8, I believe- that she had for as far back as I can remember. When she passed, it went to my oldest sister. With both her and her husband gone, I have no idea where it might be. Knowing her kids, it probably went in a yard sale. The set was complete, down to sugar bowl and gravy boat, and it only came out for special occasions.
