Last night when I was washing dishes and loading the dishwasher I realized we've had the same set of dishes since we were married. After all these years I still like them and wouldn't change them out for a new set. So for today's Question of the Day, how many times have you bought new dishes, added pieces or do you still have the same set? And please show us one of your dishes or describe the pattern.

Thos are pretty! I'd keep them too.

I bought a set of Pfaltzgraff Summer Breeze stoneware dishes when I moved out of my parents' house, and I have maybe half of those left. I do tend to break dishes on a semi-regular basis so some shrinkage is to be expected, lol. I also have some cheap plain white stoneware plates I bought specifically for the cats' canned food, because they have a high edge to keep the food from sliding off, but I'll use them for myself sometimes, depending on the dish situation.

I always wanted to have an eclectic set of random dishes, and now that there's been a fair amount of shrinkage this is probably a good time to hit the thrift stores and see what I can find.

Oh my, so many sets of dishes. The two differences between earlier sets and now is that I used to buy a full set with matching plates, bowls etc and they were heavy stoneware type . Now my dishes are totally mismatched with large plates, bowls, small plates etc each having a different maker. The reason for this is to get the exact shape and size I want in each. And all are now made of light, chip free material, like Correlle or similar.

We had the same set of dishes since we moved to this house 25 years ago. They were plain white cheap something or other brand--scratched, chipped, and not a full set any more. I FINALLY just got a new set a couple of weeks ago. Now to get a set of silverware that matches.

We have two sets that we use daily - one set that is plain black and the other set is taupe and greenish with a leaf pattern. DH had both them before I came along and I never got a new set. ☺ I am thinking on buying a new set when we move into our new house.
I also have the Royal Albert Old Country Roses collection dinnerware that my Mummu gave me.

We just sold our old dishes at a yard sale last year. When we got married DH had a set of black and white dishes. They were very masculine and I never liked him. We were dating when he bought them.

A few years later for my birthday he got me a set of correlle dishes that I love! (My request!) They were more expensive so we also got a set of white to have 8 place settings. The purple flowers are starting to fade off and unfortunately they don’t make it anymore.

Beautiful. If you know the pattern name, you may be able to pick up additional pieces online on EBay or a pattern matching company.

Try ReplacementsLtd.com. They have everything.

I've had my current set for 30 years. Once the boys were grown and out of the house, there's been very little breakage. I got this set at a grocery store promotion - you know, one free item for so many receipts. It's white with a flower circle on it. Before this, I went through two or three sets of dishes.

Since it was just me I used paper plates and plastic forks, spoons and knifes. When I brought a decent stove and dishwasher I went to the dollar tree and brought some white plates, bowls, mugs and silverware. It was fine for just me. I did not invite people over to eat. I am not a good cook and I had 8 cats so I figured no one would come. I'm low maintenance and don't need expeneive things to make me happy.

Today, I only use plain white dishes on a daily basis and also for best.

Food looks better on a white plate, the table can be decorated with different colored candles, serviettes and tablecloths without having to worry about the color of the dishes. Coffee in a colorful cup can look quite dreadful.

When I first got married we bought Contrast, Hornsea Pottery (below), which we used regularly. A few cups are missing but. although I still like the pattern, I am reluctant to replenish my stocks as the snow white plates get badly scratched from metal cutlery and even the inside of the cups have got scratched by teaspoons stirring tea or coffee. The tea plates are, by today's standards, very small. Secondhand items can still be found - they must have been kept just for show and are quite expensive. So, if I ever need new dishes. I will probably just buy new white articles from the local supermarket.

I use Corelle every day. I like the big flat dinner plates. They are white with a blue design on the outer rim. I also use their cereal bowls. If it was up to me I would replace them with newer Corelle because the old ones supposedly have lead in them. But my mother won't throw anything away. Oh well, I've been using them my entire life and haven't died yet. :dunno:

This is happening to my plates also, and I'm wondering if it's the dishwasher detergent I'm using. I just started with Cascade, which I've never liked (it used to leave spots on the glasses although the ads said it didn't), and now I have marks on my white plates that have never been there before - for 30 years. So I've switched brands again, and will have to see what happens.
