Vomiting from Fancy Feast

I've just got back from a week long visit home. During that time, Tucker was looked after by a friend who gave him his daily kibble and canned allotment. No vomiting was reported while I was away.

When I got back I gave him a big can of Friskies  Turkey Dinner pate. Tucker seemed very dubious about it (weird, since he's usually all over his food dish), but ate it and seemed happy after. The next day he got Chicken in Gravy Friskies. He whined for kibble and wouldn't touch the wet. l ended up throwing it out. Today, I switched over to Fancy Feast Chicken and Liver. Normally, this is is his favourite of favourites, but today it took him ages to eat and he seemed distinctly unhappy about it.

Next thing I know, he's explosively vomiting all over the carpet. D:

I've had Tuck almost three months now, and the only other time he's been sick was after stealing and eating an entire slice of pizza, and even that wasn't this violent.

Is this just stress from me being gone a week, or has Purina had a canned food recall I'm not aware of? He's still fine with his Petcurean kibble so I'm almost certain this is all down to the canned stuff and not a medical issue, though if this continues without the wet a phone call to the vet will be happening. In any case, he's not getting any more Purina brand anything until I can figure out why he's suddenly reacting so badly too it.

The weather is nice so I'll be heading into town tomorrow in search of better wet food.

Advice?

Poor little guy... I'm not sure what could be going on. If he's acting normally otherwise, perhaps it's just stress related. It might be that he was all stressed and worked up along with a bit of a tummy ache from it and then tried to eat. It's good news to hear that he is keeping the kibble down; if he wasn't I would suspect something bad like a blockage or something. As long as he's eating something, peeing and pooping, and playing, I would just keep an eye on it the next week. Maybe try feeding a smaller amount of the wet and see if he can handle that?

I know several people that have had the same issues with FF. These cats had been on the food for quite some time and then started exhibiting projectile vomiting. The food was stopped and kitties were better.

I do believe someone posted about a "Public Notice" in regards to Purina yesterday. I'll try to locate the article and post the link here.

I feed the FF Turkey & Giblet and my 2 have been eating it with no problems.      Is your kitty pooping okay?    Does he have hairball issues?     I'd be worried its something else.

The kibble is very cheering to me. Otherwise I'd be really worried. But no, he's happily pulling bits of dry out of his foraging box and nomming them, litterbox is all normal, and Ijust got him to jump five feet straight up after the laser pointer. I'll be trying in a smaller amount today. I'm also starting to wonder if it's the water I mix in and not the food itself since I noticed an odd flavour from the tap today. Hopefully that's it. There's not a huge selection for canned foods readily available here.

That's really scary. I'm almost certain that Tuck threw up from something in the wet food, because everything else is normal, and he still *wants* wet food. He's been banging stuff against the food dish to say he wants it, but when I put down food from the last batch I bought he walks away meowing sadly.

Very good to hear. Thank you. Maybe it's just a bad batch? Or stress? Or the water? You've made me feel a lot better since I was freaking out making google searches and wondering if I'd inadvertently fed Tuck poison. A really bad feeling. With that warning letter above I'm going to feed Purina with a lot more caution after this, but knowing that there's been no huge health scare/recall is very relieving.

What is the expiration date on the bottom of the FF can that your cat is rejecting?

I read somewhere that when can foods are made sometimes they  vary from batch to batch .. Maybe there is some minor change in the batch you got yours from  that your cat does not like ..

That is interesting. I've been feeding Purina One Pairings (same company that makes Friskies and FF) and my cat refuses to eat October 2016 cans. She also refuses to eat May 2016. She will eat February and April 2016 cans. She's been eating canned for a month and these are the only months I've tried. Something changed between April and May is my conclusion. I can see the difference as well.

Those that are having no problems should post the best by dates of their cans for comparison.

UPDATE

I switched to a rotation of grrreat choice, wellness, and Nature's Variety and Tuck stopped vomiting within two days. I suspect it was more stress than diet but I still waites a good while before reintroducing the Purina products. This wwek I ran out of the other food and without a local petstop to go to for a quick resuply gave hom a bit of FF. No bad bad effects have come of it thus far. I am being very careful to check expiry dates though just incase there was a bad batch.

Buy him bottled water so he does not dehydrate

My cats were eating Fancy Feast Classic exclusively for a quite awhile and never had an issue .  Just recently my male cat started having diarrhea and my female vomiting in the evening which is when they have the FF .  Just out of curiosity I stopped the Fancy Feast and they have been fine since .  Maybe I got a bad batch as well . For now we are not going back to FF .  I am trying to find another wet food for them which is proving to be a challenge ..

My cat has been eating the Fancy Feast Classic (Chicken Feast and Turkey & Giblets) recipes as of late with no problems.  However, she's been eating it on a rotation basis - but still no issues from it.

I only like buying the Classic recipes because all the other's look sketchy in terms of the ingredients.

Although that FDA report is in PA, I doubt that would effect WA State.

I feed FF also.. Artie has not been bothered by it.. I have not seen a difference with him. I rotate with different flavors of classic, no fish, and roasted turkey and chicken...

He has a sensitive stomach...I will keep a better watch on him..

Has this been reported to the manufacturer?

We feed Fancy Feast Classics as part of the rotation, and never had a problem.  However, if your cat is healthy otherwise, aside from coming here to see if others have had similar issues, it is very important for you to contact them directly.  I do this any time I have a problem be it cat or human related.  Stuff happens, and they would want to have it reported to check out if there was issues at the plant it came from.

The issue resolved after a few days and I believe it was more stress than diet. The intial post was to check if anyone had been having similar issues. I'm avoiding food from that particular batch more out of an abundance of caution than belief that it was bad.

I called Purina and the lady I talked to said that all cans that come from the questionable Allentown,PA. plant have 1157 as the last 4 numbers of the first 8 numbers on the bottom of the can.
