Hey guys. I’m new here, found you all because of a Google search and you seem like a great community. Hope you don’t mind me bending your ear…

My kitty Rosie is usually a pretty healthy girl. She’s 10 and outside of a minor ear infection a week ago and a flare up of pancreatitis when she was 5 she’s a lovely and affectionate girl. But now she’s gotten sick again, staying overnight at the Animerge. I think her pancreatitis might have flared up again and I just want to know what her prognosis might be? And if/when she comes home (her fever came down a bit so hopefully soon!), will she need a special diet? She has a brother and we usually feed them together, so any advice on that end would be greatly appreciated as well.

OH MY! What a lovely girl. I am quite partial to torties and calicos, as you can tell from my avatar! And my girl had a bout with pancreatitis when she was about 5, as well. Luckily, we have not had any recurrences. I hope for both or your sakes that this is not a repeat! We've had cats on here with chronic pancreatitis who did well overall with specialized diets, some for a good, long time. And this may not become chronic. I do know that diet is key, but Hek recovered, went back to her old diet, and never looked back, so I am not aware of the details.

This is the result of my search here on TCS for "pancreatitis diet". (622) Search Results for Query: pancreatitis diet | TheCatSite I hope you can glean some good information from the threads. Also, you might post about needing a good diet for a cat prone to pancreatitis in the Cat Nutrition forum. Lots of VERY knowledgeable folks hang out there!

Best of luck with Rosie, and please keep us posted on how she is doing!

You are so welcome here!

Thank you! We got an update on her today; she ate a little and her liver swelling’s down, but the docs just want to make sure she has a little more food in her system. The ultrasound didn’t reveal any problems except some swelling in nodes around the liver; the vets said it’s probably not enough to indicate cancer so she might have eaten something bad. We can’t figure out for the life of us what it could be. I might move her to a higher-protein diet just to be safe.

Thanks for the encouragement! I hope Hek is doing well herself.

Thanks for the support chums. Rosie ate a little bit more today (she wouldn’t eat the vet’s food, they had to give her the Fancy Feast she eats at home to get her to eat. Picky little idiot), but she had a little fever again last night and she’s still there. We hope there’s no cancer but they’re bringing in a specialist for a second look. There was some slight swelling around the liver lymph nodes so we want to see what that’s about. I’m just glad she has some food in her belly, I was terrified she was going to starve in there. Will update as things evolve, hopefully for the better!

One last update (hopefully): Rosie is home and doing well! She's eating like a fiend and finally passed a bowel movement last night (which is what we were hoping for). She's still on a lot of antibiotics for the stomach problem and her ears, and believe me it hasn't been fun for me and my parents to give them to her. But she's feisty and in a good mood. We've had her in the bathroom to monitor her and we're letting her out later today. Thanks so much for all your support!

Update: She threw up again. There were bits of plastic in her vomit and we forgot to give her her meds on time yesterday, but I’m still a wreck. Should we take her in or let her rest?

What is the plastic about? You have to find out where that came from, she must be chewing on some and that is causing her problems. Give her meds in a lickable treat, way easier. I give mine in Delectable Lickables in the stew flavors. You might write a big note about giving her meds and keep it on the kitchen counter, it will help remind you. You might research some liver supplements on Amazon and give her some after approving it with her vet, it wouldn't hurt. I like the Pet Wellbeing and the Vetriscience products.
She is beautiful! I wish her well, I hope she gets well soon!

Thank you! We think she broke into the pantry and chewed open the food bag. So we've moved that out of her reach and we're being careful to give her her meds on time. Hopefully she'll be okay by her vet appointment this Monday. I'll see what I can do about those lickables.

Don't forget to let us know about how things go at the vet. In some small way, your cat is now also our cat, and we will worry about her.

Hello all,
I just wanted to leave one last update. Rosie is doing excellently! She’s had (so far as I know) an almost complete recovery, has ceased puking for the last week at least and is in a sprightly and happy mood. She’s been running around like crazy and her coat (which was all matted and gross) is clean and fluffy. Thanks for the support, my friends!
